I somehow missed that Child of Light is coming out next week. Great choice to port and something I'll pick up again. I imagine Switch will get the sequel too. Cœur de pirate's soundtrack for it is still one of my favorites.

yeah id expect it somewhere around march tbh, i think that and fire emblem are going to be their big titles for the first hald of the year and then pokemon and metroid as their holiday stuff.

Animal Crossing is bigger than Metroid, but I doubt Metroid is 2019 anyway, unless I missed something

Yes, especially in Japan where Metroid is an afterthought. New Leaf really kicked the franchise into overdrive. Even Home Designer put numbers on the board.

huh, i woulda assumed otherwise. i'm a way bigger animal crossing fan than metroid, just thought metroid was a lot bigger.

No it’s just bigger among American Nintendo nerds

hmm... i think that's debatable, specially given the hype of a new prime game. this is probably specific to me but outside of this site i know like 1 or 2 people hyped for new animal crossing, and tons of people (who aren't even big nintendo fans) who are excited for new metroid. either way im putting metroid as the holiday title over ac because one seems much closer to being finished than the other.

I would love for them to add some more traditional "game" elements this time. I haven't played since the original on GC and loved it and sunk countless hours, but adding some optional RPG style quest elements or whatever to add a sense of progression could be cool (or maybe it did have that and I just don't remember?)

I'd take @The Lucky Moose word on what's big in Japan. I have no idea what the trends are there but I know they are vastly different then America's. They treat Dragon Quest like we treat Final Fantasy

  21. New Leaf has outsold the best selling Metroid game 5-to-1. Animal Crossing is gigantic and Metroid, while successful, has never pulled in big numbers for nintendo

I’m not trying to be combative, but I did some research to refresh my memory:

Animal Crossing is Nintendo’s 10th biggest IP in total sales, with almost double the total sales of Metroid, which is 14th. The gap has only widened. New Leaf sold almost 12 million copies, that’s more than double the amount that all Metroid Prime games sold combined (and also more than double the AC Wii game and about the same as the AC DS game, despite the smaller install base, which shows that the brand has grown).

Another, less exact, way to see the difference is just looking at how many games they made for each franchise in the last 5 to 10 years and who made them (for example New Leaf versus the 3DS Metroid game).

That being said, the Switch has been good for “hardcore” games (just look at how BotW outperformed many Zelda games), so I definitely think Metroid might do better than ever... but not as good as AC, especially not in worldwide total sales. There’s no way.

There is a general disconnect between the hype surrounding franchises among Nintendo stans and between the actual average Nintendo consumer. Splatoon, for example, is performing like crazy and has become one of the most important Nintendo franchises. The first Splatoon alone - A WIIU GAME - has already sold almost a third of the combined sales of all Metroid games, yet some fans act like it’s not top tier, haha.

I think it’s fantastic. I actually haven’t played any other Metroid games but this is one of the strongest 3DS games (and I say that as a huge compliment)
