I haven’t gone back too much, still looking for that perfect combo but I never get past the first boss.

Picked up Enter the Gungeon, second rouguelite ever, and while I’m still not great I’m enjoying it a lot more. I can actually feel myself getting better at it.

    Hollow Knight has consumed me.

Nah. I haven't played Xenoblade 2 so I have no thoughts on that. I will say this however: Breath of The Wild is a great game, but is massively overrated. I feel that because it was so different and refreshing for the franchise that a lot of people chose to ignore the flaws that exist. Once again, I had a lot of fun playing it and think it's a very special game, but I think at the end of the day it's still just somewhere around an 8/10.

That's just my personal opinion though, I'm not going to go on a crusade about it haha.

I love BOTW but I wouldn’t say I “ignored flaws because it was refreshing”. Actually if I’m being honest prior to BOTW I only played OOT and Spirit Tracks! However since BOTW I’ve played through 5 more Zelda games.

My friend asked me what I think is my favorite Zelda game then asked me what I think is the best Zelda game. It's a fair point because different taste for different people. I don't think I have an answer to either haha. I really didn't like Majora's Mask when it came out, but now I'm quite keen on it. I feel like I'd need to replay a lot of the entries to make a firm and informed decision.

Majora’s Mask is incredible but it took me a long time to get used to the time mechanic

That was one of my problems with it when I first played it. It was that and the world seemed rather small to me, but then I actually thought about how much there is to do and all the little side quests and it's quite deep.

I had never played LTTP before I picked up an SNES classic, but it quickly jumped into the top-3 for me, with the other two being OOT and BOTW (in that order). Link's Awakening was cool for a handheld until I learned about the select button hack, which I was too tempted to use all the time instead of playing through correctly.

I didn't even say BOTW was bad! I just said it was overrated. I think it's great. Just not the be all end all of games like everyone treats it. Saying it's a masterpiece is strange to me.

I mean... in terms of an open world adventure game there is literally no other game like it when ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It’s also visually one of the most gorgeous games with some of the smartest mechanics

There is no such thing as a perfect game. Imo a 10/10 masterpiece game can still have tiny flaws.

Btw, you’ve yet to actually say what you think the flaws are??

What do you mean no other game like it? It’s an open world adventure game where you go around and climb towers to unlock more of the map. You complete missions and side quests and gather items and get upgrades. It literally follows the formula of lots of other games. Yes it’s beautiful. Yes The gameplay is fantastic. Yes I loved it. But no I wouldn’t say it’s one of a kind or a masterpiece.

I agree there are no such thing as a perfect game and that 10/10 doesn't equate to perfection. However, I stand by my statement that this game isn't a 10/10.

    My problems with BOTW:

I hated the weapon durability system. Not because it existed, but because it was poorly implemented and didn't contextually make sense. I don't want to have to hunt around for wonderful weapons, break them and then have to hunt around again hoping I'll stumble upon a weapon with equal or greater power. I find it hard to believe in a world where so many enemies and guards use swords and spears, crafted by blacksmiths and such, that none of said blacksmiths can repair my weapons using the materials I've collected on my journey. I end up putting all my best weapons on the walls of my house.

The story, what existed of one, was diluted by the way it was presented. I would often find myself curious about certain aspects of the story and would go search for memories only to find that the memories I found had nothing to do with the aspects of the story that interested me because the scattered "explore on your own time in your own order" nature of the experience only gave me glipses of what could be a great story in inconsistent and non sequitur bursts. Also, for a story where you're a hero who has been woken up after 100 years in order to save the world from the impending doom of Calamity Ganon, the game and the world itself along with its characters, don't seem to mind if you just leisurely take your time taking pictures of yourself riding various creatures, gathering plants or just jumping on rocks for fun.

The complete absence of dungeons was the biggest complaint I had. The Divine beasts were vacant of personality or challeging enemies and just felt like 4/5 shrines slapped together into one package. The shrines themselves ended up feeling devoid of any sense of accomplishment as did collecting the Korok seeds after a while.

The final battle with Ganon was woefully underwhelming. I expected the big bad boss at the end to be more challenging than a Lynel, but okay.

Small nitpicks: inconsistent voice acting (Zelda herself was terrible) and the forced motion controls on the puzzles for the shrines were a pain in the ass sometimes in handheld mode.

These are, once again, just my personal opinions. I enjoyed the game, but these really soured my overall experience.

I can agree with the motion controlled elements of shrines, Ganons ease and the biggest thing i agree with you on was the divine beasts lacking a bit in comparison to past zelda dungeons. However none of this caused me to enjoy the game any less, i was still having a blast doing the divine beasts, BUT in retrospect, i would love a BOTW game where we had long difficult dungeons as opposed to the divine beasts. Thats the direction i hope they go next honestly.

The weapon mechanic i actually dont mind at all. I know people had gripes with it, but honestly it just didnt really phase me. i remember early game it being hard to deal with, but i feel like once you get to a certain point in the game it shouldnt really be an issue anymore. Like i would go raid the castle and there are tons of good weapons there.

What has always appealed to me about Zelda games was going on an epic quest with unique challenges, bosses, dungeons and creative weapons. This game, which was purposely aimless in a lot of ways to promote exploration and making your own journey, isn't my thing. I didn't feel a connection to anything or a moment of the story that gripped me or anything like that. What drew me into OoT was all the cinematic encounters with Sheik and the wonderful musical events. Majora's Mask was the all the different mask abilities and then the transformations. The list goes on for each game, but even with those different aspects of that made each game different mechanically, each dungeon inside them felt completely unique. Every shrine felt the same to me as did the Divine beasts.

I am willing to bet the next Zelda will find a nice blend between the two styles.

The weapon durability really killed BotW being an all time favorite for me. I will still play through it all but the weapon system always bothers the hell out of me.

I completely agree with your thoughts on the "story" (or lack there of) and the Divine Beasts replacing the classic Dungeons entirely.

I find my favorite part of Zelda games in general is the fact that the stories are compelling/help propel me forward in the game... I have never completed BOTW due to me just losing focus and interest in where I am at. I actually recently restarted after finishing all 4 Divine Beasts (but not going into the Castle). I think Majora's Mask (as much flack as that game gets) did a good job of incorporating side-quests/exploration while maintaining a clear story path.
