Question: is the goal of this game to just get higher and higher scores in each level or is the main objective to complete the level while also getting the colored coins?

Either way, this game is a blast and even looks amazing. Well worth the money.

 

So, kinda both. When you get all the pink coins, it unlocks a more difficult variant of the level with purple coins, and after those are collected, a final variant with black coins. These more difficult coins are used to purchase some of the more "special" objects for your kingdom, and they'll give you gifts, minigames, etc once you build them.

The Toad Rally mode recruits toads that kinda work as a currency of their own. If you look at the buildings tab of the shop, there are houses that have Luigi, Yoshi, and Toadette on them. You build those with toads, and they unlock the associated characters for all play modes.

Yep. And it's strict, too - my work wifi is a little barebones and the game won't work on it, while some other games will.

 

Finally got all the black coins in 1-2. If it's already that hard in the second level, I doubt I'll be getting all of them.

 

I have been murdering Toad Rally using Yoshi, prob won't ever use the other characters ever again lol

 

Leave it to Nintendo to nail a game with only a jump button, holy

 

This game is so fucking good. I'm surprised how well Nintendo nailed the Mario feel in bite sized levels and simple, mobile friendly one button controls.

 

Game is so fun. Downloaded it today and have gotten the black coins in the first five levels so far.

 

Well I went ahead and bought Mario Run. This is the first smartphone game I've paid for.

 

Straying away from Mario a bit. I got my FE art book last week and just opened it now.

I highly recommend. It's around 300 pages of concept art, dialogue, etc.

I feel like it should've been costed way more than what I paid for. I think there's some guy in youtube showing it off.

 

You guys are all obviously more natural gamers than I am, I got the first set of coins in every course in the first three worlds and felt dope, never mind any fucking black coins haha

Another question: what is the purpose of using other characters besides Mario in the Tour mode? Toad does nothing different than Mario (as far as I know) but he can't get big from the Mushroom so...is he just worse?

 

He's faster, they all have their slight differences.

 

Toad is slightly faster than Mario

Peach has a "glide" feature if you hold the screen after jumping, and it is stupidly useful for 100%ing levels.

Yoshi has a flutter jump, which is exactly what you would think it is if you've played main Mario games. Also, he can run on spikes.

Luigi is also the same as a main Mario game. More trajectory when jumping, but slightly more slippery on landings. Not as bad as main games, though.

I haven't gotten Toadette yet. Yoshi slightly edges Peach out for me as best character, personally.

 

I need to do another playthrough of Mario 3D Land to pass the time until I can get Run lol. Glad to hear good things about it.

 

This is what I figured was the case. Toad usually has the least noticeable difference.

I'm sure that helps in some cases, but I haven't noticed any real advantage to him but Yoshi has been great in this game. I still use Mario in most levels though.

In other news, my thumb is fucking sore from playing this game.

 

The speed difference between Mario and Toad is really really noticeable. Toad has more momentum especially when trying to reach the colored coins wherein you have to step onto an enemy. I think it's the last black coin of 2-3, it's easier to do if you use Toad.

I rally every now and then but finishing the game first seems more logical to me.

Worth the price imo. The levels are well-designed.

I'll take your word for it, but I've gotten every coin up until 5-3 so far and saw no spot where it was obviously easier with toad. I've gotten every coin with Mario besides the parts involving spikes that are obviously easier for Yoshi.

I wanted to use Luigi but I'm going to have the Tour Mode beat long before I've played Rally enough times to unlock him. Haha.

 

I really hope they make a Donkey Kong Country Run. I absolutely loved Returns and Tropical Freeze, and think the mine cart and rocket barrel levels would be a perfect fit.

 

Won't be surprised if rumored specs are true, but I'm really hoping it isn't.

So anxious. I'd still buy it day one but it's gonna be a bummer if there would be lack of 3rd party support again.

There's really only a handful of games I want to play that I wish I didn't have to build a gaming PC for them.

90% of third party games you'll see on there after the launch window will be exclusives, most of them Japanese. Don't assume otherwise. Indies are a different story.
