then buy a fuckin Switch, lol. it being a console exclusive doesn't mean it isn't currently accessible

Not everyone has the money to blow on a console and $60-$70 games that barely go on sale. And not everyone wants to buy into the Nintendo ecosystem if they only care about one Zelda game every few years or something. I’m not saying it’s right but I think it’s pretty understandable with how fucked everyone is that they should be able to play the new Zelda game on their PC without spending like $400 to use it for a month.

    What.

That's not how that works. They CHOSE to buy a PC. I didn't buy an Xbox or Game Pass, I'm not suddenly entitled to those games for free because I bought a Steam Deck.

Is exclusivity stupid? Sure. But that's like not the main problem here. It's that people feel morally superior by pirating games.

I'd be extremely curious to see how many people who installed an emulator and pirated TOTK also pirated a bunch of indie games or games from developers who are smaller than Nintendo, Microsoft or any of the big players.

I don’t even do it myself. I emulate old stuff but that’s it. I’m just saying I get it. If you have the means to buy all of that or you’re just being a piece of shit about it and downloading every game then yeah that’s fucked. But I’m not going to shame people that emulate a game or two because they can’t afford everything

Okay? Not everyone can afford to have a PC and another console. My friend emulated TOTK because he loves Zelda but has no reason to buy a console to play one game. I never said people were entitled to shit, I’m just saying I get why some people do it

The problem isn't just the games are expensive, it's the whole world is fucked and expensive.

Also people just tout the phrase "it's always morally correct to pirate Nintendo games" so I'd be very curious to see the numbers for pirated games if they did launch the next big Zelda game on PC.

Then don't play the game? I don't see the problem here.

I also don’t know where you got people that pirate games think they’re morally superior? Like where the fuck does that generalization even come from? Lol

Idk how you can agree the world is fucked and expensive and then have a problem with people that maybe only emulate one game to have some joy in their life without wasting $400 on something they’ll barely use. I’m not saying I agree with the people that steal every game they can. But not everyone is like that. Is it still wrong? Yes. But I’m just saying some people aren’t doing it for shitty reasons and I get it

(psst, that's still a shitty reason)
i get the "why" but those reasons don't make it "understandable" or justified. if you wanna play the Nintendo first party games you gotta buy their console.
i couldn't afford shit for years and only just now own my first playstation. that means i didn't get to play many games for years and missed any console exclusive shit for the past 15. there's plenty of other games & pastimes to bring joy in your life.

This isn't snarky, it's a genuine question: do you think the general person who pirates and emulates games is like your friend who pirated this one game because he didn't want to spend the $299 on the Switch or do you think they're someone who tends to pirate more than just the one game they want and don't have access to?

From my impression from what I've seen they lean towards the latter where they pirate many, many games. My view could be skewed and I'll own up to that if that's the case, but I would argue that the general pirate is someone who does it frequently.

Do I like capitalism? Fuck no. I think it's atrocious and should be burned to the ground, but I'm also realistic enough to know it's not going away any time soon. Everything is too expensive, the whole world, including video games and including making video games.

I suppose my thought process is this: I'm worried that someone who pirates games regularly is more likely to just pirate any game and not just stick to the "one exception" or a game from the big three (Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft). In a world where these studios are already struggling, shutting down, having mass layoffs, I just think we're all fighting a losing battle.

Do I think the answer is charging $500 for a new piece of tech every 6 years for someone who can't even afford their rent because they live paycheck to paycheck? No, of course not. But I don't think the solution is just stealing content from companies especially companies we know are already extremely anti-consumer and anti-game preservation in the first place. That just feels like you're poking the bear.

I honestly don't know what the middle ground is. I don't have a solution. I wish everyone didn't have to rely on money and people could just create and play and enjoy and games could just be seen as games and not content or a product. But I just don't think trying to justify it as if it's some moral high ground is the way to go about it. And that could easily just be because I see a bunch of random internet dudes on Twitter who think they're being Robin Hood by taking on Nintendo by pirating all their games.

Yeah sorry, I don’t think a person that emulates one or a couple of games because they’re a PC player that can’t play Nintendo games should be treated the same as people just trying to steal everything they can

Kinda weird seeing posts in one video game thread about 900 people losing their jobs and similar pretty much every day, then in this thread posts essentially being "yeah just steal shit"

This I agree with. Also I would once again like to point out: emulation is not illegal. Your friend could have purchased TOTK for all I know and just played it with Yuzu on his Steam Deck. I don't know the situation.

Like if I were a gigantic corporation like Sony who is greedy and does some shady stuff towards consumers but makes tons and tons of money I would feel a lot differently than if I were an indie studio and people were just downloading my game for free when those game sales directly affect my companies existence and livelihoods.

I'm concerned that when people just start throwing out "but emulation is fine, piracy is okay because everything is expensive and the world is fucked" people just take that at face value and pirate more than just the games like Pokemon Scarlet or whatever.

No, they’re probably the latter and I wasn’t really ever disagreeing with you on that point. All I was ever trying to get at was that some of those people truly are not being pieces of shit about it and just can’t afford it or can’t justify that cost for maybe one or two games they’re interested in. AGAIN it is still wrong. I am not condoning stealing games. I’m just saying that I get why some decent people do it

This is what I'm talking about.

To be fair I feel like I need to establish a point. These large companies are making millions of dollars and some of them are making record profits and the responsibility falls on them to take care of their employees yet they chose not to. Their greed is abhorrent and part of a bigger problem in our world today.

If this was directed at my comments, I was never even close to saying “yeah just steal shit”. I said it was wrong multiple times. But I don’t think people emulating a game or two because they don’t have legitimate means to need to be treated like they’re trying to rob these companies.

Yeah, I completely get that. I think my tone came off as harsh when I didn't mean it too and I do apologize for that. I can tell now exactly where you're coming from. At the end of the day we are just talking about entertainment (as much as it is art) and the whole monetary part of it is disgusting in a lot of ways. And I don't think people should be punished for just trying to enjoy life when what they are doing isn't hurting others.

I'm always just worried it spreads to the point where it IS hurting others like smaller companies who really need those sales.

One of the things that bothers me the most in life is the consumption of art now and how it's all been labeled as content and pushed out as a product. There's so many times when a game comes out and you can tell it was just a game that was made because they needed something good for Q3 or they needed something before the end of the fiscal year to appease shareholders or whatever. It was rushed or turned into a live service or has heavy micro transactions or something and it just rubs me the wrong way.

    Nah you’re fine.

And I agree but it’s not right even if the large companies are barely hurt by it. I only wanted to point out that some people are just doing it because this world is a fucking nightmare to live in and I’m not going to condemn you for wanting to play a Mario or Zelda game on your PC for a month and then delete it. People straight up stealing catalogs of games are absolutely dickheads and most likely the majority though.

Yeah, if you're like "dude, to play this one game is ridiculously expensive and I just want to be happy and also you know, eat/pay bills and not shell out near $450" that makes total sense. The world is trash. I'm actually really struggling with it. I'm not exactly having suicidal tendencies but I'm definitely wondering why it's worth living on this planet with how batshit everything is right now. It feels like everything is working against us and I dont know how to make it stop. I know I can't.
