Alright stuck on SMB3 World 8 Fortress, which I now learned is considered one of the hardest levels in the game, and the one some people have been literally stuck on since childhood and not able to beat.

Yeah and if you don't start the level already with the Tanuki suit you are completely fucked from the start.

This is genuinely a very nice thing to read. I could never do it because it was so hard for me as a kid. Good job!

So having played through both Super Mario World and Mario Bros 3, I would say I like the game mechanics and power ups in SMW more, but SMB3 has better level design.

Also started playing the first SMB (SNES All Stars version) and I am already at like World 6 in just two or three sittings lol.

So I've never played a Hitman game before, but I've watched enough Funhaus videos that I might have to.

I thought about maybe doing SMB2 before Wonder comes out too, but does a game that was originally it's own IP that they just laid Mario characters onto so it could sell in NA, and doesn't have any real traditional Mario platformer gameplay really even count?

It is a cool, weird game for what it’s worth

It counts because it introduced Shyguys and Birdo among others. And it's a fun game.

SMB2 is weird for a Mario game because it wasn't designed to be a Mario game.

Starfox Adventures was like that too, where it was originally its own IP, called.Dinosaur Planet but Nintendo decided to make it Starfox last second.

This isn't entirely true. In fact, Miyamoto, during development of Doki Doki Panic, requested the game be made more Mario-like, which led to the horizontal sections, as the original prototype was strictly vertical.

Beyond this, several elements from Mario like the coins, POW block, and Starman were already present in the final product, which made conversion into Super Mario Bros. 2 even easier.

You could then argue that Doki Doki Panic, unknowingly, was born to be converted into a Mario game.

This is also a gross oversimplification. Plans between Rare and Nintendo to make it a Star Fox game began in 2000, when it was still intended for Nintendo 64.
