I don't know that it has anything to do with HD and more to do with the fact that handhelds were invariably less powerful than consoles.

They got games consoles wouldn't have because there wasn't any other choice. Either a game was made specifically for that platform or it wasn't made at all. And Nintendo handhelds sold well enough to where ignoring it was leaving money on the table.

I mean, I guess if someone wanted to push a less powerful console and get other companies to make games for it, then we'd maybe see the same scenario, but I don't see that happening.

Mario and Luigi is gone because the developer went bankrupt, so that's maybe not a great example.

    Shovelware never left.

Also, Nintendo farmed out their licenses all the time to make that vast library happen. Like the three Zelda games made by Capcom.

Oh it definitely has. The HD era, especially post-360, has ballooned development costs. 3DS games were cheaper to make and thus had a better profit margin, especially for the kinds of games I am talking about.

Nintendo could find a new one, that does not matter

    … handheld games

Yes, but it's definitely more prevalent now on a modern console. Wii and DS had tons, but you don't see it so much on Wii U, Vita, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series, etc. The boom of Switch and its ease of development and porting really led to a resurgence.

Btw AlphaDream shut down because of rising development costs in the post-3DS era

Also, what is shovelware supposed to be called when it's almost all digital now?

Not trying to nitpick, I think we're in agreement here, just not using the same terminology. I don't think it's being SD that made games cheaper to make for the DS, I think it's because it's just less powerful hardware all around.

They could, but if I'm a businessman, and I see a franchise put a developer out of business, I'm probably not eager to go back to that well.

On October 1, 2019, AlphaDream declared bankruptcy, citing sluggish revenues and high development costs, and being unable to keep up with growing debt (which as of March 2018 was over ¥465 million).

I think that's more Steam's fault than anything.

Right. That’s what I same saying. Development costs.

Well, no, because it’s what you’re (or think you’re) expected to use that power for (HD graphics that look good on TV) is what’s gonna cost you, not the power itself

It's a bit of steams fault, but it's also a lot of Nintendo's. They allow ANYTHING on their platform except for straight up hentai games. They've actually been more lax on certain censorship compared to Sony and Xbox.

It's misleading to just say development costs, is my point, because it was also a matter of them being in debt and not making enough profit.

If development costs stayed the same, then if they were still in debt and not making money, they'd still have to shut down.

    It's more complicated.

We're still talking about a handheld, right? If the handheld is HD, then why does a TV matter?

This is true. There are quite a lot of questionable games I've seen on the Switch that I actually haven't seen on Steam. So I guess it's a combination of that and ease of development.

There are some WILD games. Truly bizarre and sometimes disgusting games.

Eh. I've seen a bunch of those, but it's not really anything compared to the dreck that winds up on Steam.

The difference is Steam is Steam, this is on a Nintendo console.

Then they're really shedding that kid-friendly image they accrued in the 90s, aren't they.

I mean, they now have Mario with guns so anything goes

Fun fact: Mario was originally supposed to have a gun.
