I kinda found the kirby demo boring, but I may not have been in the right mood for it. Didn't actually finish it, so maybe I should go back and give it another shot.

I think that people need to remind themselves while playing this game that it's made for kids. Not in the way Mario Odyssey and Kart are catered to both audiences, Kirby for a while now has been strictly for kids and parents who want to play with them.

I really strongly disagree with this statement.

I mean, that's fine. You'd be wrong, but you can be wrong.

  6. Whats the proof that Kirby was made for kids.

Kirby has never been overly difficult.

I dunno, maybe it's my fault for feeling self-conscious, but I feel like there's no reason to describe a series as being "strictly for kids and parents" when there are clearly adults who enjoy the series just fine. Things like that bother me.

I didn't say the whole series. There are a ton of Kirby games that aren't heavily geared toward kids like Dream Course, Planet Robobot, etc, but Kirby Star Allies definitely shifted them into more of a family oriented area and they've continued down that path with their side entries as well.

It makes sense because Kirby is such a gentle and likable character and lends itself to a lot of whimsy and outlandish things you would expect in kids entertainment.

Granted, I've only played the demo for The Forgotten Lands, but it seems to be staying down that path for the most part, maybe a little bit more for a bigger audience, but I don't think anytime in the near future we'll see Kirby talked about in the same way as a Mario or a Zelda where everyone is playing it.

I'll admit I haven't played Star Allies, so I can't exactly comment on it. I have seen it played by other people, and I don't recall seeing anything that made it seem like anything other than a fun Kirby game to me, but I dunno.

Hey, this could easily be me projecting my beliefs onto what I glean from Nintendo announcements and directs, but I've haven't seen Nintendo attempt to give Kirby the same kind of love they give other franchises, but that's also fine. I'm not insulting the game for its difficulty or lack thereof, I'm just commenting that I think it's more geared as a kids and parents type of game compared to something like Odyssey.

I'm still excited to play it, I'm going to buy it because I really like the Kirby franchise. I don't think it's a bad thing for a game like that to exist and I think Nintendo doing it makes a lot of sense especially when they potentially have BOTW2, Xenoblade 3 and Bayonetta 3 coming out this year. Gotta appeal to all audiences.

I feel like a lot of Nintendo games start out extremely easy only to pull the rug from under you and expect super-human feats after a few stages.
The recent yoshi games come to mind.

Facts. Doesn't mean adults can't enjoy it of course. But they're definitely made with little kids in mind I think.

Not taking shots at you directly Penlab, but I think it's fine to accept that some things just are made for a younger audience. That's not to exclude adults who enjoy them, but they're being created to specifically cater to someone else. It's not derogatory to refer to something as a kids game if that's plainly what it is.

We're in a bit of a weird cultural moment where for a long time video games were thought of as a kids things - we were those kids so we got used to thinking of games as belonging to us - and now we've all grown up and video games have become acceptable as an adult media, but that doesn't mean that all video games still belong to us. Play them and enjoy them by all means, but there are other audiences out there now too.

I'm not necessarily arguing with this perspective, but I do think that different words have different implications and so it's important to be clear about what we mean and to take other people into consideration.

I've had many times where I've had to seriously rethink my words or clarify something I've said because it came across in an unintended way or had an effect I didn't expect.

For something like Kirby, I agree that they are family friendly, made to appeal to all ages. But to say they're "strictly made for kids" feels unnecessarily exclusionary to me, and frankly, a little insulting. That's my take.

I'm not even sure what the point was of the original comment. Was it a reaction to Kirby being compared to Elden Ring?

I think it was in reference to it being called easy. It's a very valid point in that context, I think.

I won't lie. I totally forgot that people were adding that modifier in their posts when talking about the game. I totally thought the post was following up the meme that was posted comparing Kirby to Elden Ring, and that's where some of my vitriol comes from.

Instead of reading the post as "Hey, you guys keep calling it "but easier" but remember what audiences this game is geared for", I was more thinking "Hey, Kirby's what the real men play? Don't you guys know it's for kids?"

That's my mistake. Following posts in threads gives me goldfish brain.

Finally just got a Switch for my birthday (mainly just to play Animal Crossings to destress from working in healthcare right now/the past few years). I am already strongly addicted to Animal Crossings but what other games should I get? I played the Kirby demo and really liked it. What Mario game should I start with/invest in?

If you want another game that's good for destressing after work that is similar to Animal Crossing you should download Stardew Valley.
