Happy Metroid Day everyone!

 

Now having actually played Metroid Dread, I totally understand why Sakamoto was unable to make this game for almost 20 years after Fusion. In Fusion, there are those segments of the game where Samus is being chased by the SA-X, and those sequences are really tense and harrowing but ultimately they are entirely scripted. There's one path that you run down and the SA-X follows that path behind you. Clearly, the EMMI robots are the direct evolution of that concept. Sakamoto obviously wanted to iterate on that idea and create a scenario where something more intelligent was chasing Samus around in a more open-ended environment. And clearly that wouldn't have been possible to this degree on DS or even on 3DS. It's truly incredible to see him finally realize the vision he had for how to take that mechanic of being hunted to the next level.

 

This thread and general Dread hype got me to play Super Metroid for the first time last night. Surprisingly very playable for something from 1994! I get some of the complaints though. I like those little zones that unlock the map for you so you can find those "secret" rooms, that helps a ton. And thankfully on Switch I can create save points whenever so it's so much easier haha

 

I think Super Metroid has aged as well as any game out there. There’s a few little things that are minor annoyances (the wall jump is a huge pain and cycling through weapons feels awkward sometimes), but overall the game holds up well. Graphics, music, sound effects, boss fights, exploration, etc... are all fantastic.

 

Went to Walmart, target, Best Buy and GameStop all at their opening hours. Not a single extra white switch OLED but plenty of red/blue. I’m going to wait until more white are in stock in stores. Never will I ever buy one from a scalper online just to have it day one.

 

Super Metroid holds up 100%. It's still one of the best Metroidvanias of all time all these years later. A true 10/10 game.

 

Fuck. As I age, the less inclined I am to play difficult games. I still react like a child whenever I get frustrated playing one. That's unbecoming of a man in his mid 30s.

Super Metroid is one of my all time favorites, so I was hoping for a difficulty level on par with that.

 

One of the other things about Super Metroid that I noticed already, which is pretty cool for the time, is that it really rewards using strategies and patience in the boss fights. Like once you figure out where/how to position Samus some of them are a breeze. But if you just try to go all out on them it will never work. I mean I know a lot of Metroidvanias are sorta like that, but you can just tell the developers had put a lot of thought into it even back then.

 

it's extremely fair though, although I am pretty hard-stuck at a boss right now so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

same is true for this one as well. since I am stuck on my main save I started a 2nd save and I'm like 1 hour in (so, 3-4 hours on my initial playthrough) and I only died to emmies so far. Even took down bosses first try.

An hour into Metroid Dread and having a blast so far

 

Ugh you're all gonna make me buy it

 

Played a few hours of Dread last night and had a generally good time. Found that the first couple areas felt a bit samey, and that made exploring a little bit less exciting. Hoping that changes as I get to know the map a bit better.

 

Ugh my Walmart preorder still just says “placed” not even “preparing” but it still say “arriving today” so we’ll see. I’ve never preordered from Walmart before, but I really wanted that Dread coffee mug. Lol

 

Brought my 3DS to work so I can finish up Samus Returns before starting Dread this weekend. I haven’t played a 3DS game under my desk at work in years.

 

The first 2 areas are rather samey but the variety does pick up. I don’t wanna spoil anything so I won’t mention what I’ve seen so far.

 

Stayed up until 4am playing Metroid. Love it.

 

I have many games to finish before I can get Dread. I’m going to see if it goes on sale next month for Black Friday. I need to beat 3D World, Outer Worlds, The Last Campfire, Skyward Sword, and I’m sure many others.

 

GTA Trilogy Remaster is coming to Switch, awesome news.

 

Couldn’t help it after not being able to find one in stores this morning and not being able to grab one anywhere online so I agreed to buy a White Switch OLED from someone on fb marketplace for $425…you just know this person bought it this morning solely to scalp it. Unbelievable
