the ps4 pro /one x didn't undercut or divide anything either

A Pro model doesn’t divide the fanbase, the old model would still play all the games.

I’m just glad I don’t have to worry about feeling any FOMO related to wanting a Pro model. I can just skip this thing entirely.

I’m also glad they aren’t trying to push more powerful hardware right now during all the component shortages. In 2023 it should be easier to get a Switch 2.

You're not wrong, but I actually have a whole different set of gripes about that, just because in my mind, the point of releasing more powerful hardware is so that you can in turn make better software.

I'm ready to be proven wrong, but as far as I'm aware, the Pro and the One X don't have exclusive software that can't be played on any other iteration of the console. And because there's no real reason to upgrade software-wise, there's no reason for the fanbase to be divided in that respect.

I suppose Nintendo could do the same thing, and they kind of did with the New Nintendo 3DS, which only ever had two exclusive games IIRC, but to me that's an example of why you don't do something like this. What is the point of better hardware if you don't give buyers a legit reason to invest?

it's performance / image quality related. Look at Age of Calamity, it hovers around mid 20 fps. Most Monolith Soft games are a blurry mess. The APU used in the Switch is just extremely long in the tooth.

The people that are fine with that can keep playing on their regular Switch, but everyone else is kinda SOL at this point.

Because there are people who want to be able to run existing software better. That’s reason enough for lots of people. A pro model is an optional upgrade, as opposed to a full new console which isn’t if you want to keep up.

I don't feel enough of an urge to get the OLED model but it would def look nice. The OLED screen on my Vita still looks nice.

I can't really argue with that, but I guess from Nintendo's perspective, it's not worth making a slightly more powerful unit just for the people that are bothered by those kinds of issues. It probably saves them money to make a Switch like this one, that uses the same specs but adds QOL features. And then they can turn their attention toward making a real successor.

Xenoblade is a blurry mess because they don't care or can't get it done, not because the Switch can't do it

Lack of 4K is a major disappointment, but OLED is pretty cool

I can't justify this one. I bought the second Switch model because it was actually a slight upgrade in battery and such, but this is just a waste of my money.

The OLED Switch is so damn funny, I love that this is what everyone has been endlessly and insufferably rumormongering about for months. So funny.

I wonder who will be producing their panels.

LG is known for fantastic TV displays, but their panels were full of uniformity issues in their phones. Samsung kills it in the mobile space, and even Apple uses their displays. I think Sony makes their own, too, but I know nothing about them.

Anyone else and I'd be very worried about the quality

Nintendo probably like, but they said they wanted a new switch lol

It's not. It's apparently a half step as there are still reports that devs have been asked to make stuff for 4K and that there will be a completely new model in the future.

I assume it's actually just work for their future console at this point but who knows. Nintendo is just always going to Nintendo.

I could honestly still see them releasing a pro next year with BOTW 2.

a burst and I'm awake now Supporter

I spend 99% of my Switch time playing it in handheld/portable mode so a bigger, better screen and the kickstand is definitely worth the upgrade for me. The OLED Vita was a huge improvement over the LCD model and hopefully this will be the same.

A spec bump would have been great but tbh I'm not surprised we didn't get one given 1st party games aren't exactly pushing the capabilities of the current model - BOTW2, Splatoon 3 and even the next 3D Mario will probably be using the same engine/assets as their predecessors. A true 'Switch Pro' won't launch until there's 1st Party games that necessitate it (and which are ready to launch alongside it)
