So turns out I ended up getting Animal Crossing! Sister bought herself a Switch for her home and it came with Animal Crossing but she won't play it so gave me it!

So I’m really close to getting my gf a Switch. I live in Japan. I know Switches are region-free - butttt if I got her a physical copy of the new animal crossing game from here, would she be able to play it in English?

I’m a bit confused as to how it all works with accounts too. If my account is English, does that mean I’m tied to the British store and therefore cannot spend a Japanese Nintendo gift card or whatever you call the funds?

There are games I want on the Switch that are on the e-shop only, and all my currency is in Japanese yen. So ideally, I’d be able to use the Japanese e-store but in English? Is that possible?

Sorry if these questions don’t make sense. I’m so confused.

 

1. yes. my wife was in japan when Mario Odyssey came out so she bought it there, she had a US account. it was English when she played. funny because the store she bought it from had to call Nintendo to confirm that

2. yes accounts are tied to region. to offset this, you can make a new account under a different region. if you buy digital games on that account other users on the same switch can still play those games regardless of region (i have a US and JP account)

3. I don’t think there’s a way. I had to memorize the eShop UI to browse the jp store. And I think JP eShop price are more expensive than US, and the sales are worse. I really recommend you just grab a US account if possible

 

Thanks so much for the info. Just regarding your third answer, basically I can have my UK account and a Japanese account, but be able to play games bought with either as either profile, yeah?

 

I really want to get Animal Crossing though I’ve never played a single entry to the franchise, but I have so many games I need to play and finish. I’m practicing self restraint.

 

The sales on the Japanese eShop CAN be loads better than the US sales. For the past few weeks they've had really good games that have been on sale for 100 yen. I have no idea why, but it's crazy. Right now it's like Guilty Gear and Double Dragon IV and such, but you definitely have to search and wait to find the best deals.

The online page for each game should tell you whether or not it has English support. Be careful because you may get a game that releases in both regions simultaneously, but on the JPN eShop it doesn't support English. Just food for thought.

Really loving Celeste, but gd I resent being chased in games. I don't need that stress right now.

 

Being chased in games is the worst.

Funny enough, that's the premise of the VR game I'm developing. An endless runner where you are being chased through desolate parts of the world.
