also on a more personal note, some of the music that has most impacted me in my life has been video gane music and it irks me to see people disparage it by treating it as some sort of throw away aspect of a game. thats more on my side though.

 

at the end of the day theres really no wrong way to play a video game if it's the way that you enjoy the most. it would be wrong to say "video game music sucks", but the devs got your money all the same and it becomes, like all art, yours to interpret and consume in a way that maximizes your enjoyment. i agree that in some games you're losing a lot of atmosphere and extra flavor by missing out on the audio, but no one else is losing out. if you're someone who plays your own music instead by default, you're probably not the person that would appreciate a games score anyways or else you wouldnt be drawn to the habit in the first place. i watched half of The Irishman on my cellphone screen on Netflix and that would draw the ire of plenty of old school cinephiles and i couldnt care less. some people rearrange albums and cut tracks. in the end i just am not bothered.

 

Sound is essential to rogues

 

for something tangentially related, i could care less about the story of a game in most cases and that's blasphemy to most. i just happen to come to a game for the mechanics and exploration 9 time outta 10. im not immune to being swept up by a great game story but it's a rare occurence. i skip a lot unless the cutscenes are gorgeous.

 

i exclusively play slay the spire on mute because its pace makes it the perfect game to play while watching tv, when you stop the game stops. id say i play gungeon with the sound on about half of the time.

 

Yup, I am the same way.

Yeah some rogues have sounds that can tip you off and make a run a little easier others are the perfect podcast/music games.

Idk there’s not many scenarios where I can just listen to a couple albums without doing anything else so I do it while playing games. I’m surprised that’s a big deal to some people

I bought Slay the Spire at around noon and I’m still playing. Steep learning curve, but deep system.

 

Ori is a beautiful experience in every sense, def a game i play docked on the TV and give my full attention

 

Definitely parts of that game where it feels like a straight up movie score, I love it

I just listen to dogsong from undertale on repeat while playing any game idk about you guys

I have an INTENSE amount of nostalgia for the soundtracks of the two Sonic Adventure games, they were some of the most played games of my childhood

Like if I hear Live and Learn I will get goosebumps
