The openness of it and DQ9 (and XCX) to me is far more appealing than what DQ11 does

I think if every JRPG was as open as XC2 the genre would be overwhelming af. I enjoy it in XC2, but wouldn't be a good thing if it was a genre norm imo

def all down to taste but XC2 is def my least fav of the 3, as much as i like the world and characters i really dont like the combat system. i dig turn based and i dig realtime, but those in between systems with cooldowns and such like MMOs almost never do it for me

I love the combat but that’s not actually what I meant, it could be turn based too

I found DQ11 so confining, I just don’t want to play games like that anymore I think, unless it’s Pokemon, which somehow feels different

would prob be way more in if it were turnbased

i get that for sure but id take it over a lot of empty space which is pretty prevalent in XC2 (also kinda a thing in DQ XI as well though and is maybe my biggest gripe - not a ton to reward your exploration in connecting zones)

The connection zones are truly terrible imo they might as well not have bothered

i would love to see a deviation from random encounters in general in jrpgs. overworld encounters like in XC2 and DQXI dont count because at the end of the day they are mandatory disguised as optional, you're gonna need to grind them. the "choice" is only helpful when backtracking and even then JRPGs already have items like repels/chimera wings that handle this. i would love a smaller, tighter RPG where each fight is curated and part of the narrative and they are all balanced together to cumulatively prepare you for each boss, and if you were under leveled you could just go do more sidequests or something.

XC2 overwhelmed me and I never finished it. It was fantastic though.

DQXI is one of my favorite games I've ever played

Kind of like Undertale. That has random encounters, but barely.

XC2 did some things i was too lazy for. i loved the idea of unlocking skill tree nodes by accomplishing specific tasks but i always had to bounce in and out of menus because i would forget what i was trying to unlock, for whom i was trying to unlock it, and how to do it

    Fun must be always. Prestigious

    2020 cobra plays more jrpgs

By the end of 2020: cobra only played one jrpg because they take 1000 hours

It’s definitely overloaded and has weird systems, I could do without all that, I really mostly mean the structure etc.

The XC2 DLC is actually a stand-alone 20 hour JRPG

I definitely don't want all JRPGS to be more 'open' fuck that. They are long enough when they are mostly just linear.

That has nothing to do with it. Torna is open and 20 hours. Most JRPGs are too long no matter the format.

I still haven't finished XC2. I've finished P5 and DQXI twice each. I definitely don't want every JRPG to beore open lol

Only in terms of marketing. It’s a stand alone game really. Own story, own characters, own everything. You don't even have to own the main game. It’s a perfect example for a 20 hour, open JRPG.

Openness isn’t equivalent to length, that’s just not true, so many linear games are long and vice versa

Many JRPGS open up in the last quarter of the game and that's perfect for me
