I'm jealous enough of people that get to play games for a living without them getting a Switch and Zelda early, for free.

I hope Crystal Dynamics ports Tomb Raider and Rise of the Tomb Raider to the Switch

Not advocating an "endless stream of hardware." I've talked about this before in relation to Nintendo's artificial scarcity (because that is what it is, make no mistake), but the simple solution is to have a highly-publicized open preorder period prior to beginning full-scale production, close it off, make that many units plus a few extra, and then everyone who was paying attention is happy. Also scalpers can't ruin the fun for actual fans. Also people (like me) won't be forced to pay extra for bundles containing games they don't want just because they weren't able to get a preorder of just the console in time.

@Anthony_D'Elia wasn't the problem there being that people who preorder can cancel on a whim, and they Nintendo might end up with a lot of unsold units?

And I always assumed the reason they did this (limited supplies) was because they are less able to handle risks compared to Sony and/or Microsoft. Emphasis on it being an assumption.

I really don't have a horse in this race though. I don't think I know how supply and demand works well enough to have an opinion that actually counts, haha, but I am somewhat interested in the topic.

    Also scalpers are the worst.

Sure preorders can cancel on a whim, but the number of people who do preorder and then cancel can't be big enough to make a huge difference. And the way this thing has been hyped up, honestly, I don't really buy into the theory that even if people canceled there would be unsold units sitting on shelves and eating into Nintendo's bottom line. These things are going to sell during that launch window. Also, there are ways to get around people cancelling preorders.

Really I'm just sick of Nintendo not wanting to take my money, is all. It's baffling to me, even though I go on the internet every day and see people who think everything Nintendo is doing is fine, if not a good idea, which honestly is even more baffling to me. It's frustrating, as a lifelong fan who grew up with a Game Boy and an NES and an N64, to have to fight with scumbag scalpers to get a Switch because Nintendo insists on being so uncaring toward its audience.

Also, as to the supply and demand thing, they're not even doing that right either. They're limiting the initial supply to drive up demand, then when the demand is insanely high, they still only provide a comically limited supply, thus failing to meet the demand they've created. Look at the NES Classic, and how stores are still only getting 3-5 at a time and selling out in seconds despite the holiday shopping season being well over and the demand being so high. It makes no sense.

I'm pretty sure they delivered as many NES Minis as they thought they were going to sell. Once they figured out they were wrong, production had already moved on, which caused the delay.

The reason there are only two million Switches is either because it is a rushed launch, or because they thought that this is what they would realisticaly sell withing this fiscal year. It does not make sense to rush out a console to boost your fiscal year, only to then build more consoles than you expect to sell.

The more I watch the videos, the more I realize I've probably never been this hyped about a game before. I honestly wish this is going to be the best thing I'll be playing all year, or in a long while.

    It just looks so massive.

That's an absurd statement. They knew exactly what they were doing and how well it would sell. If this was the first time they did this I would give them the benefit of the doubt but the amiibo shortages alone prove that contention wrong. They know their products have intrinsic nostalgia value, because they are Nintendo, but they also know that anything they do related to their retro gaming history is doubly nostalgic. Like I can't even believe someone would actually argue that Nintendo had no idea the NES Classic would be a hot commodity.

Well the second explanation is just not true so it must be the first. And in that case, they shouldn't have rushed the console out. Like, I don't know what else to say. They should've done right by their fans. Again, I don't understand why you're arguing in favor of them doing what they're doing when it hurts your fellow Nintendo fans.

Just out of curiousity, did you manage to get a preorder?

I felt it was extremely easy to preorder a Switch. There were multiple days to have an opportunity to do so, and other chances sprouted up after the initial wave too.

They had a bad year. Making the fiscal year was very much what this March launch is about. It's important even if it has downsides.

Yes. Also, both in Germany and the Netherlands, where I spend most of my time, you can still get guaranteed day one pre-orders right now.

So this thing comes with one wall plug in the box, which presumably most will use to plug the dock into the wall and leave forever. What about a plug for on the go? Will any usb C cable and wall adapter work or is this like iphones/ipads where you're supposed to be careful to use a block with the right voltage?

Must be nice. They've been completely sold out at US retailers since the day preorders went live and maybe the next two days after that, depending on the retailer. Like I said, I went online the morning of and couldn't get a preoder anywhere except at GameStop, and I had to spring for a bundle that came with Zelda, 1-2-Switch, and Has Been Heroes, two of which games I have no desire to own and will be attempting to return once I get my shipment. And I was one of the lucky ones.

Also @The Lucky Moose I understand your position on this issue now. I've found that most people I've seen who don't have a problem with Nintendo's behavior re: the Switch are ones who were able to get a preorder.

i can get a pro controller through best buy with release day delivery but i don't know if i should. my only real justification for it is my worry that I'll have to stop every 4 hours to charge joycons.

Lol no I just went to business school and follow the business side of the industry fairly closely, so I have an idea of what's most likely the cause of what is happening. Yes, they are very conservative Japnese company, which leads to them to underestimate demand, but that's about it. I wasn't able to get an NES Mini either, me having stuff is not the issue.

Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Lasts About 40 Hours On A Single Charge

I didn't realize that they had such a long battery life. Also didn't realize the Wii U Pro controller had 80 hours of battery life, which is crazy. Wonder what accounts for that downgrade. Regardless, 40 hours is a looooooong time. It might be worth picking one of those up for that alone. I'll probably hold off for now though, as that price tag is a bit prohibitive after dropping $300 for the console, $60 for Zelda, and $30 for the 2-year insurance plan.
