it might just be a cost calculation. they have a certain threshold they need to hit where it is perceived and to be "good enough" and doing anything more would be hitting a point of diminishing returns.

    Yeah that’s what I mean, I’m 99% sure that’s the case

If that's the case, then it seems like Nintendo just feels some of their franchises weren't meant for the full big-budget treatment. Going forward, everyone needs to kind of just decide whether they're ok with that or not.

im inclined to believe that all this margin talk is in reference to Game Freak rather than Nintendo. they basically exist off of Pokemon. Little Town Hero and Rhythm Knight or w/e aren't paying the bills if i had to guess, so they are probably being conservative.

if Pokemon games were truly first party we would probably be experiencing something much closer to what people hoped SwSh would be

Yeah but like if Nintendo wanted it to have higher production values they have ways of helping that happen. It's not just Game Freak's call.

If you look at the details of who owns what in the Pokemon franchise and the companies involved, I’m pretty sure it’s definitely Nintendo’s call

Like I get that the Pokémon franchise's ownership is a complicated question, which everyone ITT loves to point out constantly lol, but at the end of the day Nintendo is the publisher and it's one of the biggest franchises that they publish and put their name on. If they wanted these games to be more expensive and have higher productions values, they'd make it happen.

It’s not an equal partnership at all if you really look into the details. Nintendo’s grip is pretty firm. I’m pretty sure I read that the only reason why they decided to not fully control/own it themselves is that it was too big to be contained basically.

it just seems so anti-Nintendo. almost all of their other big franchises are in a renaissance right now. they're always willing to risk a loss on new ventures. it would just be weird if Pokemon was the one thing where they were like "nah no extra resources for them"

Nintendo gets to enjoy the fruits of that enormous profit margin too, ya know?

right but what im saying is that the most recent entries in their other IPs are dramatic revamps and exponentially more resource intensive. they are visibly aware that putting the money into a revamp every 10 years or so pays off over time, but it hasn't happened here. they wouldnt lose a problematic amount of money if they spent the time and resources to fund a new engine or something for Pokemon if it better prepared them for the future.

Pokemon as a franchise has been hell bent on recapturing those who fell in love with gen one and two since Go came out, but if they focus on getting Pokemon more in line with the AAA gamer's expectations and present a more competitive product, they may get new players which cant hurt margins in the long run.

I totally agree with you. I just am also trying to figure out why it seems like they phoned in so many aspects of these games considering it's the first full-fledged console generation of the franchise.

Only it’s not really. The Switch is also a handheld and Pokemon is really mostly for that part of it. There’s a reason the Lite came out now. Console Pokemon is a niche game, handheld Pokemon is a huge game, and handheld Pokemon doesn’t need to be BotW.

Like, it is really strange that Zelda and Mario got enormous, high-budget, near-flawless Switch games and Pokémon is an uprezzed handheld game that's missing half the franchise's Pokémon for seemingly no reason. The only explanation I can think of is what I said earlier:

And by the way, if that's what they want this franchise to be, that's fine, but they should be honest about it at least.

They've always referred to Switch as a "console", even though it is a hybrid, so I'm just going off of their own classification of the system.

That depends on the market. In Japan for example the handheld part is emphasized in marketing.

And the Lite of course is a handheld everywhere, and the timing was obviously Pokemon related.

I'm sorry there's more than one market?

console Pokemon is only niche because it doesnt exist yet by your own definition. stuff like XD doesnt count, it was an obvious spinoff to even my preteen eyes. cant define something as niche before the market has a chance to display the demand imo

Monster Hunter found its longest run of success on handheld.

Monster Hunter World launched on console and shattered those previous sales and found an exponentially larger audience.
