I'm going on March 6th. So damn excited for each NIN and Boys Noize and the combined set. This shit is gonna hit so hard.
If add violence and not the actual events came out as one album it would probably be my favorite record of theirs
i always spin them together with Bad Witch in release order. i know Bad Witch was labelled an album instead of an EP for the sake of streaming optimization, but it doesn't take away from the fact that it fits super well into the trilogy with the first two EPs. it's probably their best material since The Fragile, and i hope the risks they took (especially on Bad Witch) might be indicative of what they have planned for the next album.
new TRON: Ares remix & B-sides album. no new vocal tracks, but some interesting stuff/collaborations here.
I'm going to dive into this soon, but wanted to say that my first reaction to seeing that this was available to preorder on vinyl was frustration that this release is getting pressed but it's still impossible to buy Year Zero, The Slip, and the Ghosts albums (all of which I already know I love and would readily spend money on).
my assumption is that they probably didn't have the means to do it all by themselves until they resigned with Interscope. the last true NIN releases on vinyl before Ares were Bad Witch, which was done with Capitol, and the With Teeth reissue. a Year Zero reissue probably would've been easier to do at the time since that was also an Interscope album, but i think COVID, the pressing plant backlog/delays, and a prioritization of score work probably pushed those reissues to the wayside. but they're back with Interscope, they have rights to pretty much their entire discography now (save for Hesitation Marks and PHM), and at minimum, a hi-res remaster of Year Zero has been around on streaming services for a good while now (maybe pre-COVID). so between Ares, their tour, and the new Interscope deal, i'd say it's not a question of if but when, and i imagine it's probably coming sooner rather than later. i think this release just came sooner since it's winding down their promotional cycle for Ares.
Yeah, I think it makes perfect sense that the new stuff gets prioritized (and I understand that there can be issues with rights). It's mostly just annoying that they announced definitive editions of Year Zero and The Slip in 2017 and we still don't have them. Also, this is one of the biggest bands in the world and it's insane that you can't readily buy even bare bones versions of some decently popular records. Whoever owns the rights should just want to have some stock of those available. I'm not going out of my way to find examples, but I have to believe Interscope has pressed some relatively unappealing releases that could've just been these records instead haha
you're not wrong. i do think it's also just a money thing too. the owner of my old local record store ran into Trent in LA back in 2018 and asked what was taking the DEs so long, and he said it was a money thing, but they were coming at some point. i do want them in hand though, since those two and the Ghosts records are the only mainline releases i'm missing (excluding other remix albums/other Halos).
The Slip, Ghosts, and Hesitation Marks are all I need to complete my collection of the main studio releases, tho I would absolutely love to have a comprehensive Halo collection one day (fat chance tho ha). frustrated that the prices for The Slip have been creeping up into the range of what I paid for YZ just about 2 years ago, also frustrated that HM seems to be OOP now and I don’t like that record enough to want to pay more than retail for it and I passed over a copy of it multiple times at my local record store and now it’s gone. really hope they get it all re-pressed at some point.
could've sworn i've seen a newer pressing of HM in the past couple years at local record stores and even Target. i definitely think you could find a good deal for it on Discogs, especially if it's a lower priority for you. edit: i'm incredibly wrong, Discogs prices start at $80 for this new 2021 pressing. what the fuck? maybe see if local stores have it for cheap via their online portals. i don't know the next time this will get a new pressing given the catalog shift to Interscope (since HM is widely unavailable on streaming except for the US).
I saw them earlier this week, and while they were incredible, I had a bad enough experience with the crowd that I ended up leaving early. It was my first arena show, and I underestimated how intensely my sensory triggers would be going off.
We've heard this one before but, to be fair, he's turning 61 this year. Might not have it in him to be on the road in his 60s. Of course, life could (and will) continue to get more expensive so he might change his tune. I can see him taking the residency approach eventually.
he's also got 5 kids. i imagine he'd want to spend more time with them at home than being on the road so often (even though this definitely isn't the end of new music)
given he’s said in an interview recently that new NIN is actively being worked on and that “the fuse has been lit”, I feel like we may get one last (explicitly final) tour surrounding that, should it actually come to fruition. I do think regardless it makes sense that NIN would be winding down as a live act, but I also think he is older and probably being halfway through the second leg of a pretty intense tour is amplifying his feelings of “I can’t do this much longer,” and leading him to express such things openly. if he’s saying “probably” and not “definitely” tho? I think he’s intentionally leaving it open-ended and there’s still hope to be drawn from it. he said similar things at the end of the 2022 run.
I could also see them just being a “festivals/one-offs only” band going forward. Do something along the lines of what their 2022 shows were like
me too, even tho they were great when I saw them in September, I went back and watched a video of the set I saw back in ‘09 and in retrospect I think that was literally the best show I have ever seen.
They Waved Goodbye in 2009 before I ever had a chance to see them, so I'm glad I took every chance I could when they came back with Hesitation Marks.
this was my first NIN show, high school me could have never fully appreciated it, but I am glad this video exists so I can relive it to some degree. can’t fucking believe I got to see The Becoming and I Do Not Want This!!!! also I fucking adore how Trent’s voice sounds here, he’s got such an intensity and grit to his performance.
