tbh i think the first nin i would show someone is not the actual events. good little sampler of a lot of the different shades theyve tried on in a little bitesized 20 min package
Pretty bummed to hear about the Tron number of vocal songs. This was not the NIN return I was looking for, but still excited. Just not sure if I wasted $50 on a vinyl copy. Ordered two of the peel it back posters!
some of the instrumentals are supposedly solid too, and at least in terms and runtime, the 4 tracks with vocals make up about 20 minutes of the score. would definitely love more, but i'm at least glad we're getting new NIN with vocals to begin with
i believe they indicated a little over a year ago they were excited to dive back into making a proper NIN record, so i'm hopeful one is on the way
It’s probably the album that’s clicked with me the most. TDS is not really doing much for me surprisingly but it seems like it’s a grower of an album for most folks I’ve asked Hesitation Marks is also full of bangers. Copy of A is insaaaannnneeee
some really great production here. was not expecting several reprises of AAAYNMTB (albeit each different in their own way), but i imagine they'll work well in the context of the film.
hard to say, but i'd love to hear them try! the song that sounds like it (I Know You Can Feel It) is really solid.
when I first heard TDS I could barely get through it, but once you get more familiar with it and start to understand what’s really going on under the surface it’s untouchable imo. a lot of it is sneakily catchy too, but at first glance you wouldn’t really glean that from it. I have been a fan since like 2008, and it wasn’t until 2020 that TDS became my favorite album of all time. I was a Fragile truther up until then. idk, I just wouldn’t give up on TDS if it’s not clicking yet. also idk how you usually listen to music but imo TDS especially is best experienced in headphones. I would also HIGHLY recommend checking out this downmix someone did of the 5.1 surround mix of the record converted to stereo, obviously you won’t get the full effect of the mix but imo it’s worth listening to regardless bc it has some significant differences to the original mix.
some other scattered thoughts: despite it being a score, hearing reprises of a few songs caught me off guard. there's definitely some melodic connective tissue that makes for some interesting repeated motifs (AAAYNMTB being the biggest one), but it feels different than a typical score's take on repeated themes. can't really explain it other than maybe i wasn't expecting as many? This Changes Everything sounds like a spiritual sequel to In Motion (from The Social Network), with a bit of DNA from The Hand That Feeds. it's pretty awesome. the score gets much closer to Wendy Carlos than Daft Punk, but still feels characteristically NIN. i wish there were some more sinister-sounding cues (particularly some more percussive ones), but it definitely feels deserving of carrying the NIN moniker in a way that Trent and Atticus's other score work doesn't (even though that piano sound Trent loves on all his scores does show up several times). it also feels more experimental and liminal in places than i was expecting, so i'll be curious to see how some of these tracks grow on me. the duet with Judeline (Who Wants to Live Forever?) is quite beautiful, and her voice works really well on this song.
