Hollywood Reporter first broke the news Foo Fighters Reveal New Drummer to Replace Josh Freese Although, a lot of people are questioning the legitimacy of the news. Speculation is Ilan is stepping back from the tour since his wife is pregnant and due any day now. So Josh is stepping in
Honestly, if this is all legit, then I’m curious as to what the logistics behind Ilan’s hiring was. Like, how far in advance did Ilan know that he got the gig? When did he have to break the news he was leaving NIN? This is so wild lmao
I enjoy both bands, but FF vs NIN is a no brainer for me in favor of NIN. Artistically, I can’t imagine leaving NIN for the admittedly huge shadow cast by Hawkins plus Dave Grohl’s presence. I guess FF tend to play more consistent tours than NIN. I love Ilan and loved seeing him in NIN. Cheers to the next chapter, hope for the best for both parties.
I was betting on Josh getting the PJ gig too lol. But they don’t have any plans for the rest of the year, so it’s still possible! Yep. Ilan joined NIN after Josh left in 2009. Ilan was hired per Josh’s recommendation too
I think it’s obvious that Josh was chosen because of his history with the band, but I love the idea of Trent getting Josh as a fuck you to Ilan lol
Well I only wonder cus it says he was committed through the end of the year and now Josh is the drummer lol. Either way, super stoked to see Josh again with NIN. Will be at opening night next Wednesday.
Just remembered another Josh/Ilan connection. Ilan filled in for Josh when Foo Fighters dates conflicted with Danny Elfman shows
Bittersweet. I actually got into NIN due to Ilan Rubin's involvement and grew up with that version of the band so I'm bummed to hear this.
Ilan deserves his flowers for sure. Wish into March of the Pigs like they've been doing on tour recently is basically 6 minutes of relentless 269bpm and anyone who can pull that off should get some props. Josh is an absolute beast, it has to be said, glad to have him back.
RIP The Perfect Drug Seeing them debut it live for the first time at Red Rocks was a top concert moment for me
Ilan is the man, but The Slip/Lights In The Sky era lineup is my fave, so I’m stoked that we now have 4/5th of it back lol
Ilan is a crazy good drummer, and there is a legitimate argument that he is the best one the band has had but Freese is no slouch either. plus, Ilan has been posting some zionist bullshit over the last couple years, so I was a bit disappointed to see him joining the live band for this tour anyway, despite his immense talents. I got to see the band on the NIN/JA tour, and I believe that was Ilan’s first outing with the band, and he was only 19 I think when he was hired on. I was 16 at the time and it was so cool and inspiring to see my favorite band pick a drummer that was close to my age, so I will always have a special place in my heart for the Rubin-era, but given his stances I am kinda relieved. plus Freese is a legend. idk, maybe Trent will decide to remove it from the set but I have a hard time believing that Josh Freese of all people can’t pull it off. in fact, I feel like he will want to take on the challenge knowing his predecessor managed to pull it off.
