This was fucking fantastic, I was transfixed the entire time. Cooper is amazing in this (and I can't believe he's not really considered likely for the Oscars), and it's gorgeous to look at too. Wish I got around to seeing it in the theater but still glad I finally watched it

it’s extremely easy for me to believe he’ll be on the outside looking in considering the types of performances the oscars like to nominate, but that doesn’t mean i don’t want him to be nominated

Cooper definitely deserves to be in the conversation imo, especially considering some of the people they're likely to actually nominate.

right. i agree he “deserves” to be in. it isn’t surprising though that peter dinklage seems much more likely to be nominated for a likely bad and seemingly baffling musical biopic for cyrano de bergerac that no one will see

Kinda struggled with the first half (which might have to do with being at home. I’d be more locked in at the theater) but the second half won me over. I think the last hour or so of this is excellent

I do not see an awards worthy performance of Cooper at all there. I thought he was miscast.

well, no, considering he’s in the running to get nominated for best actor lol. not saying a nomination is guaranteed by any means like it is for will smith, but he’s in the 4-8 best odds group for all the prognosticating sites

it’s hardly my favorite performance of the year but that is the opposite of the consensus

Whether someone deserves an award and whether or not he is likely to get nominated for awards are two different things.

sure, i agree with that. most years none of the nominees “deserve” to be nominated/are actually the five best performances of the year. out of the likely nominees, i don’t think it’s a stretch to say he’s among the five most deserving, but it is a bit of a baffling crop that seems to be in the conversation this year

As long as Jared Leto wins everything will be back to its natural equilibrium.

i can’t imagine seeing the last scene and thinking ah yes we simply cannot nominate this guy when leo gave the worst performance since J. Edgar

in an ideal world it’d be some combo of phoenix, cumberbatch, cage, nishijima, hoffman, jadidi and isaac but that was never gonna happen. cooper is better than many of the other near locks to be nominated.

He was great in the last scene. But I wasn’t impressed by pretty much anything else he did. He just felt off to me and I normally like his work. Also, I didn’t like the movie either.

I’d throw Simon Rex into the Best Actor conversation if big awards cared for just about anything A24 does. I think it’s too bawdy and funny of a performance for the big awards, so life goes on as it does.

i do think both of copper’s roles this year were originally supposed to be leo. i cannot imagine leo doing a better job in either.

  25. I loved this. Didn't think it was perfect -- pretty lofty with a handful of threads not being resolved or even really delivered on -- but just as a whole, I thought the cast and performances were excellent (Cooper and Jenkins in particular), the story was gripping, and I honestly thought it looked really good. GDT is an excellent storyteller and this is a particularly suspenseful example of something that is missing more and more from mainstream films imo
