John has always been the driving force behind this band (vocally) but in this record I think the band has shown tons of growth and he’s just slightly not as good - seems tired or less polished in spots. But the music is great and will be great for the live shows coming up.
Lyrically it’s pretty mediocre/leaning towards bad but there’s moments where it’s decent on that front, voice wise and melodically/range is def a huge part of it
Really enjoy this album and will have this on rotation for a while for the remainder of the year I do wish that they pushed a little more out of their wheelhouse on this one. it's a more-of-the-same progression than a significant step forward in their career progression
I feel like this is why it won’t be lasting for me but then again it’s just got fire indie pop, for me I’m still loving “dry eyes” and “like I do” but the my boys stuff is not only just bad but then think about how the 1975 made “Guys” and it gets even worse, combined with the pretty obvious gap in lyricism between the two, in the long run there’s a reason one is my fav band and one I will enjoy but not constantly come back to and that’s how I feel after sitting for a few days
I mean it’s def a bad example of my other point about the gaps in lyricism lol but i at least enjoy the lush production and structure of that vs this one is bad lyrically and it gives off some weird frat energy
I think both are equally “bad” in terms of content but I enjoy the song boys better because it’s more upbeat and bops along
I think maybe the common ground we can find is that it’s pretty funny we are debating “Guys” vs “Boys” lmao
They’re releasing a cover of Iris tonight. Jonathan said they’re also working on their next album already.
I definitely think nightly fans would be into The Ivy and their new album, if you haven’t checked them out before. I think I found them around the same time when they both started up and they’re both still putting out quality stuff.
