I definitely don’t want the divisions to change. I hate the Eagles with a passion but I love playing them twice a year.

Woah, 7 playoff teams means that it’s possible an entire division could go to the playoffs the same year.

    That would kick ass.

Realign the conferences while we're at it and adopt NHL seeding rules. Top three from each division and then two wild cards. It actually works out pretty smoothly

    NFC East:

    Washington
    Philadelphia
    New York
    Tampa Bay
    Carolina
    New Orleans
    Atlanta
    Detroit

    NFC West:

    Los Angeles
    San Francisco
    Arizona
    Seattle
    Minnesota
    Green Bay
    Chicago
    Dallas

    AFC North:

    Indianapolis
    Baltimore
    New England
    Cincinnati
    Buffalo
    New York
    Pittsburgh
    Cleveland

    AFC South:

    Jacksonville
    Tennessee
    Houston
    Kansas City
    Las Vegas
    Los Angeles
    Denver
    Miami

Fuck, just realized this would mean another week I have to set a fantasy lineup and probably dealing with more injuries...I already hate this change

Memories are nice, but that's all they are. Prestigious

Yeah, I’d expect a lot more injuries this year now. Im not seeing anywhere saying they add another bye either.

I don’t get this post. Why wouldn’t you want division champs to still be guaranteed a playoff spot and get home field against wild card teams? Imo you can’t have winning a division mean nothing.

I'll play...so, how do you do the schedule? One game against common division foes (7), one game against similar seeds outside division (3), one game against division outside conference (7)? Or is it more of a random mish-mash, which would make it hard to ensure you play every team every few years?

I actually think the current system of 2x division (6), 1x similar seeds from other divisions (7), and 1x another division in other conference (3) works really cleanly.

They have, for years, wanted to get the Super Bowl to align with Presidents Day weekend, giving people the Monday after the game off. A 17th game + another bye would get them there.

Why would I want to reward a team for mediocre play and hurt a team for being great, just not as great as one other team.

    7 division games
    6 conference games
    4 opposite conference games

I’m hoping there would be an added bye week but come on, this is football. Injuries suck but they happen.

  15. for sure they suck and they do happen but they will obviously happen even more frequently with more games added

More games means more injuries but also more time to recover. What I’ve always thought would be a cool idea is to give each team 2 bye weeks. The seasons longer for the fans but the players get more rest.

also I wish they’d leave the number of playoff teams alone. Making the playoffs should be an achievement in itself. Almost half the league making playoffs, regardless of their record, just sounds silly.

It's more regular season games but not more "games"

Regardless of record? Lol, you still much more than likely need a winning record to get the 7th seed.

Oh, no real starter is going to play a single snap in any preseason games now. We're already well on our way to that this past year...but a 17 game season with 3 preseason games, teams will just dump how they approached preseason game 3.

I think moving past 16 games is a mistake...but, if they're gonna do it, the only real mistake they are making is just not going to 18 games. Its obviously gonna be a money maker, and after 17 games, they're gonna want to keep expanding it. Just make it 18 now, keep 2 preseason games for the scrubs to compete for their dozen roster spots, make opening weekend Labor Day weekend and the Super Bowl presidents day weekend. College football can still have its saturdays...but no need to avoid starting an extra week for no good reason.

Since realignment, 28 winning record teams missed the playoffs that would make it under this new format, most being 10-6. Only 8 teams at 8-8 would make it.

  22. for sure - the 7th seed in the AFC would have been Pittsburgh at 8-8 and the 7th seed in the NFC would have been the Rams at 9-7

Is this accounting for forcing mediocre division winners into the playoffs?

I suspect that Matt Cassell 11-5 Pats team makes it under this format.

Also, while they are at it, require division winners to be at 8-8 to qualify.

  25. yup which means the first few weeks of the regular season are gonna be extra sloppy and a lot more hamstring injuries haha
