The advantage of having the Browns and Bengals in the division the whole time, and then for a brief period in there, having like a 5-6 team division.

Seahawks one might be more impressive, since they only really ever had one of AZ or SF being terrible at a time. The Saints one should also be 2005; somehow they were last in the NFC South at 8-8 in 2008, while no team in the AFC West broke 8-8 that year.

I was impressed by the Bills until I remembered that they actually finished 4th for 6 years in a row and that streak ended in 2013. There *was* that time period where the Dolphins and Jets weren't awful and the Bills were.

So he’s reinstated with no games being suspended? What a joke.

That was probably the most egregious and intentional thing I’ve seen a player do in decades.

I mean, he was suspended indefinitely, so technically it ended up being a 6 game suspension.

I think there's a pretty reasonable argument for tacking on Week 1 of the new season onto it just to make a point, but, I remember most of us calling for him to be suspended the rest of the season, which he was.

Weird, I felt like I remember it happening near the end of a season, not with six games remaining. Thanks for the clarification.

Regardless though, I think 6 is still too few for something so bad.

    Should've given him one game.

we knew this would happen in the offseason, but i thought for sure they'd reinstate him right after Brady signs somewhere so no one would notice.

is Jerry not really in charge in Dallas anymore? it's weird that all 3 of their big offensive weapons are gonna grind out getting a contract instead of just being handed a large sum of money like Jerry (presumably, i don't follow the Cowboys much) used to do. weird that not a single one of them is gonna get this done easily or quickly.

    - Zeke sat out and eventually got paid
    - Dak is gonna get tagged and be pissed (another Cousins situation here?)
    - no word on how Cooper's contract is going

Holy crap, didnt realize both Cooper and Prescott were UFA right now. That seems like a huge oversight to leave both guys in a situation where, if one of them decides they want to leave, you have no ability to keep them

Jerry handed the reigns over to Stephen Jones and Will McClay about five or so years ago. Since then, our cap situation has drastically improved, we’re drafting very well, and our contracts have been team friendly.

If we don’t work out deals before free agency, we can actually use both the franchise tag and transition tag for Cooper and Dak, but even if that does happen, I’m confident we’ll get both signed this offseason.

After them, Jones and Quinn are our two next biggest decisions. We have the money to sign them (especially after we cut guys we don’t really “need” like Lee or Witten) but it’s just a matter if they feel like they want to spend the money on them or not.

I trust they’ll make the right decision. Our personnel and cap situation has been really great under them, it’s mainly been bad coaching that’s held is back. Hopefully McCarthy and Co can do much better.

If I'm a Cowboys fan I'm in no way calm about that situation.

Tell me what I missed Supporter

I would definitely be calm, the Cowboys can't have a dark stretch like most teams, SO many free agents constantly want to go there even if the Cowboys don't sign them all. Worst case scenario is they're off for a bit and immediately reload

If Jerry was still running everything, I’d be concerned. But I trust Stephen and Will.

Franchise+Transition tags blows up 60% of their free cap space and gives them no definitive way to keep Byron Jones as well.

I dont get any sense Dak wants to leave and that they'll work that end out...but a month out and hearing nothing would have me freaking out

I mean Dak isn't gonna wait forever. If you have money to lock up your franchise QB you do it asap imo.

Could you explain the math on the tags you’re referring to? Last I checked, we should have nearly $100 million in cap space after cuts and there’s no way the tags would cost $60 million.

Yeah, just checked and after expected cuts and two restructured contracts, we’ll have around $94 million.

  22. preppyak

    Feel the Wrath Supporter

I was going off Spotrac, which has you at ~$73mil in cap space.

Coopers transition tag is 120% his salary, so ~$17mil, and Dak's exclusive franchise tag would be ~$33mil, so, ~$50mil on the cap against what I was imagining was about $80mil in cap space (there's one or two obvious contracts coming off the books there).

Okay yeah, I just checked and edited but expected cuts and restructured contracts should have us at $94 million, that’s what I was going off of.

And that’s them playing on the tags, I expect to tag them and work out an actual contract before the season starts.

Maybe Dak is waiting for Mahomes to sign his new deal...though Im not sure I see that happening until the summer...but the math is pretty obvious.

Back to back franchise tags is ~$80mil. Might as well just hand him the Russell Wilson deal +$1 right now, cause that's the bare minimum it makes sense for him to accept.
