    I also re-read that argument and the catalyst was, I confused Dave’s argument for Mike (socklord’s) argument.

    Mike was the one who bet me and said the Jags will definitely finish 5-11 or worse and pick top 5. So when I was saying “you can’t assume we are headed for regression”, I said it to Dave on accident and that misrepresented his argument. And then Dave got frustrated and I dug my heels in when I should’ve double checked what he was saying. I was having two arguments at once basically and thought Dave was saying the same thing as Mike, so I ended up arguing a point he wasn’t trying to make. Mike was the one who suggested this team is likely to run into trouble if they don’t make any changes to offset the defensive losses. (Which is also true and fair).

    @EntryLevelDave
    I agree that any number of variables could throw our offense off track - Fournette getting hurt, defenses adapting to Minshew after watching his tape, Chark getting taken away from the game plan, OL inconsistency, etc.

    @socklord I agree that we didn’t make any “right now” solutions to help the offense, and the draft may not provide any day one help to fix our team. I recognize why that leads to you doubting we will finish better than 5 teams when we have only cut / traded players, and been less active about signing players than almost every team.

    I’m sorry I came across like I was dismissing all of that because all of that is valid. I try to use the words “I just think” or “in my opinion” to be clear that I’m not just being dense but I suppose I wasn’t clear enough. I didn’t think y’all were WRONG I just felt compelled to point out the counter narratives out of hope.

    I.e. *maybe* getting rid of the losing culture from the Coughlin era didn’t hurt the team as much as we think it did. Plus, it’s *not uncommon* for young offenses improve in year two of continuity. So these two things together COULD lead to 6-7 wins despite all the talent we lost.

    I want to believe our young corps can improve enough year two to carry the team a few times in games they shouldn’t win. So I spent pages debating why that’s *possible*. But, that’s not the reality a lot of the time and I should’ve been more clear about acknowledging that. Because the info so far says “Jags lost a lot didn’t gain anything”.

    Just being wistful and I recognize that and should’ve been more clear about that. Should’ve said “I know it makes sense we’ll suck even worse, but this is what I hope happens.” Would’ve avoided all that.

    I love you Randall, buddy. I also want you to know that I feel optimistic about Minshew and Chark too. I watched and paid attention to a lot more Jags games last year than I'd like to admit because I had Fournette and Minshew in one of my fantasy leagues. Minshew was absolutely impressive last season considering the turmoil around him. Hell, he was the only good thing the Jags really had going for them. I just get bummed out that Caldwell isn't really doing anything to help him. I get the impression that he wants to roll into this year status quo to see if Minshew is the guy just so he can draft a new QB early next year if they finish poorly.

    I think the last sentence is probably exactly what’s happening. Caldwell is the type to follow a player from high school to final year of college if they had an illustrious career throughout - this is why he was so smitten by Fournette and Ramsey who had been elite prospects / recruits since they were sophomores in high school. (Ramsey lived up to that and Fournette didn’t so far, but hindsight is beyond the point).

    So I actually think it would be completely on brand for him to gut everything for Trevor Lawrence... because Lawrence is THAT QB that everyone knew was gonna be good early on. And he can easily justify tanking by saying “if Minshew’s the guy, he’ll win a lot in spite of all this. If he doesn’t, and he can’t do anything with this bad roster, the fans won’t miss him anyway.”

    He's trying to rebuild for a team he's not going to be a part of next year, but he's also gonna go out there saying he's giving Minshew a fair shot when he honestly really isn't.

    This is the steepest part of the bet for me. But, someone recently pointed out that literally half the league threw single-digit INTs last year, so yeah, that IS the bar you have to set. (Also why I hedged my bets by saying 10 or less, rather than “less than 10”)

    Dave is right that this is a weak bet if he’s worse than half the league in year two. If I want to have some hair on my peaches about this I gotta go for low INTs cause that’s super important in modern football.

    Minshew only threw 5 in 12 games last year so I’m sticking to it. He could get confused by disguised defensive looks or get stumped by elite press coverage and throw 14, sure. But I trust that he protects the ball. He’d rather dance around for 12 seconds and gain 3 yards than throw a bad INT. Cause that’s what he showed me last year.

    (Maybe throw the ball away and protect yourself sometimes though dude lol.)

    I’m gonna expect an extra layer of nfl chaos this year with what I’m expecting to be a lot less times for players to train and gel with their teams

    Give it time, it might grow on you. I love it and lyrically it’s probably one of his best already. I know the slower tone of it turned some people off but I’m glad he did something different this go around
