That's like 10 backs from each era (early 2000s and late 2000s) who, after their fourth year, were still worth at least: a front-loaded contract that paid most guarantees in 2 years.

Which I think should be the basis of any RB negotiation. They gotta be elite & not have too much tread or injury issues, to get a high amount of guarantees past those two years. But front-loading the first two years of the deal gives more flexibility and makes more RBs worth re-signing, if you can pull that negotiation off.

I think you really can't assume that a RB is done after year 4. If they're really good and worth resigning RIGHT now and you don't see any injury concerns, I don't see a reason to shy away from it. Especially if they aren't demanding heavy guarantees in years 3 and 4 of the deal.

If they are asking for thicc guarantees later in the contract... then yeah you have to weigh that against, 1) are they elite 2) have they already taken on a ridiculous amount of wear and tear or injury issues. But I feel like front loaded deals are the norm for runningbacks and given that precedent, a top 10 runningback is worth re-signing.

It's also worth noting that even some of the players who were done by year 7-8, had their best seasons in year 5-6, not their rookie deal. So if you don't extend them, that doesn't mean another team can't benefit by offering them a two year deal. More often than not it seems that runningbacks peak between year 4-6, not between years 1-4.

How about this one though - out of those RBs you could re-sign, how many of those teams couldve drafted an equally good RB instead that year?

Youd be better served with something addressing ADHD. I mean sure you can do both but I think the former would benefit you more

Hey. If you wanna collect data on that be my guest lmao

But if I already have a really good runningback I'd rather spend my draft picks on other things also. I get not wanting to pay positions too much... but RB already get paid less and take up much less dead money typically, than other positions. The RB is ALREADY the first guy to go if the team runs into cap issues, so the conventional way of handling RBs is fine as-is imo.

For me it depends on the guy and the money he wants.

    The rivalry is back on

Ok I’m convinced. When I had looked last time, it was roughly 50/50 from the set we were talking about. This new set benefits from hindsight a bit and avoids huge names that got the big deal and floundered (like Chris Johnson and Demarco Murray for instance, although they might be a little newer than this crew), but the success rate certainly looks a lottt better 20 years ago than now

Speaking of Evan Engram, for whatever it's worth, Matthew Berry from ESPN said he was hearing chatter at the combine about the Giants potentially looking to trade Engram lol
