Yeah adding to this, my biggest issue with Cousins is he has awesome weapons and is still an average QB

If he's 26 and playing top 10 in every stat, fuck yeah go sign him! Maybe he'll get better! Kirk Cousins is THIRTY ONE. He's not magically gonna get you over the hump, that's NEVER going to happen. If it does feel free to smear me, I love the Vikings so I'd be ecstatic. But it's not happening. I don't gamble anymore but I'd gladly put $500 on the Vikings never winning a Super Bowl where Cousins plays the majority of season and whole postseason.

 

Quarterbacks are playing into their 40’s now, it’s not like he’s a couple years from retirement.

Schaub himself was a free agent right? Same with him, had Andre Johnson and Arian Foster and an OL led by Duane Brown... and yet his trajectory went from “above average” to “pick six king”

 

But are those QBs getting better or worse as they age, or are they performing at about the same rate as they have always done?

 

2 offseasons before that, Peyton Manning wanted to come to Houston and we said no because we had Matt Schaub. We also could've drafted Wilson (although obviously every team could have haha). It's so easy to miss out when you're afraid to take risks. Staying with something that feels safe is in itself a risk.

 

Lol, I’m not betting money on them winning it all. I’m not even saying that they will get close to doing that. I’m just saying that he is a franchise quarterback and if you disagree, then I th ink your requirements for that are unrealistically high.

 

If you don't think he has a chance to get you to a Super Bowl he's not a franchise quarterback because that's the point of being competitive. If you're not putting yourself in the position to get to a Super Bowl you're not competitive and you don't have a franchise QB. That's not unrealistic, that's the ENTIRE GOAL.

 

Washington thought Alex Smith was a franchise quarterback before his injury too, but we all knew he wasn’t going to take that team to the promised land

Cousins is good enough to win a Super Bowl though. He might not carry a team like an elite guy but he’s certainly good enough.

 

I’m still catching up to this discussion lol. But let’s be fair - Bears with Cousins wouldn’t have that defense. For starters they’d have been just good enough to miss Roquan Smith (not good enough for playoffs back then) and they also couldn’t afford Khalil Mack cause Cousins costs 50% more than he does. That immediately debunks your point of “with that amazing defense Cousins would go far.”

That’s peoples point. You’re focusing on the scarcity of QBs only. But the problem is if you overpay an average QB you then can’t afford to build a team around them. And an average QB can’t carry an incomplete team.

Most QBs’ success at least partially reflects what’s around them. So you gotta be careful what you’re paying a guy like Cousins who, entirely built the success of his career on a supporting cast elevating him. The production his pay is based off, lends itself a lot to the players you can no longer afford once he’s extended. So it’s kind of a self contradicting move when he’s never been a “carry the team” QB.

 

So now you ARE saying they will get close to that, am I hearing correctly?

Sure, but then he needs the rest of the roster to be as good as it possibly could be and that is absolutely not the case for the team right now which is why it’s incredibly shortsighted for them to give him an extension full of more guaranteed money

 

@Dinosaurs Dish re: your edit, if you're saying he can't carry the team, that's exactly why you don't pay him that much: because you need that money for people to help carry the load, and by paying him that money you prevent him from being good enough for a Super Bowl

Cousins is fine

hes in that mid-tier range of QBs. He absolutely COULD win a Super Bowl but that doesn't mean hes great

 

There’s like 2 QBs that you could argue “doesn’t need the whole roster to be good”
