But that implies taking a high draft pick always pays off and it doesn’t. Look how many busts there are. Bears are a great recent example. Amazing team and they risked it all on Trubs. If they had someone like Cousins or Smith, they’d be a playoff team every year.

They had Jay Cutler and weren't a playoff team every year so what makes you think they would be with Kirk Cousins or Alex Smith? (And I'm firmly in the "Cutler was underrated" camp.) Do you really think that team is/was/would be amazing?

Side note: That offseason the Bears ALSO spent a bunch of money on the promise of Mike Glennon, so that really doesn't help your case.

It's not just about being a playoff team, it's about winning the SB, and Cousins doesn't give them a chance to do that.

like if the Vikings are just trying to make the playoffs year after year, sure keep running it back. But cousins has hit his ceiling at this point in his career and I think he’s shown this is the furthest he can bring the team.

He was a tackle in those places.

Fun fact: Mitch Trubisky was a bad Cody Parkey kick away from taking the Bears exactly as far as Kirk Cousins has taken the Vikings at a much younger age

I like Cutler a lot but Cousins and Smith are better than he was.

And yeah, we’re going in circles now. I just have to agree to disagree with y’all because I think once you have a franchise guy, letting him walk to hopefully find another franchise guy doesn’t make sense to me and is way too risky.

To elaborate further, for five or so years now, the Vikings have seen themselves as playoff contenders each and every year (and they have been), but that's not going to last forever and this offseason has shown the greatest signs of the beginning of the end. They've moved on from players who used to be among their best (Everson Griffen, Xavier Rhodes), while some of their best current players are in their late 20s/early 30s (Adam Thielen, Eric Kendricks, Harrison Smith, Anthony Harris). There are glaring concerns on their roster (offensive line, defensive line, cornerback) and they have little cap space to address those issues, yet they want to guarantee all this money to Kirk Cousins when they would have been better off getting off that train after 2020 and hitting the reset button. Instead, they doubled down on Cousins, guaranteeing him more money in the process to make more cap space this year, and decided to kick the can of their problems further down the road.

This will continue to be a discussion in the future and the Vikings still won't get to where they want to go because Cousins isn't good enough to elevate the deteriorating roster around him. Hell, the Vikings would have probably been better off not extending Cousins and just signing a guy like Mariota instead to take over in 2021 so they weren't left with Sean fucking Mannion.

Lol come on, you know that’s a bad comparison. That’s like implying Watson isn’t as good since he hasn’t made the championship round. Or that Bortles is.

That's the problem: We agree about that, Kirk Cousins just isn't a franchise guy and that's a fact at this point.

Womp, I'll never forget that beautiful touchdown catch in the super bowl

If Deshaun Watson was 31 and had a similar resume that's exactly what we'd be saying. He's got space to grow into something better, Cousins really doesn't.

Again, your definition of a franchise guy is vastly different than mine and seemingly most every NFL team. He plays good enough to demand franchise money and will get paid like one, so yeah, he is.

Man get the fuck outta here with that haha. "Seemingly most every NFL team" lmao do you think every NFL team is lining up to sign Kirk Cousins? That's such an "I'm right and you're wrong" statement to make about something you're so wrong about. This is such an annoying argument to keep up for a loaf of wonder bread

Any team that doesn’t have a franchise quarterback and has money would be bidding on Cousins if he hit the market. If he wasn’t that level of player then he wouldn’t get those offers and sign deals. You think the Vikings are the only team in the league who values him that highly?

Me, an idiot: Teams should expect better than what Kirk Cousins can bring at 31 years of age and work to improve
Dino, an intellectual: No they need to keep him so they can keep missing the Super Bowl and waste the prime of the rest of their team

I think no intelligent team values Cousins that highly, that's for sure

Then there’s 32 stupid teams in the league because they’d all jump to sign a guy who’s top ten-ish in nearly every stat for the course of his career.

Unless you’re like the Jags. If the Vikings were like the Jags they’d not only keep Cousins they’d also trade Diggs and Hunter

The mentality of “unless you’re top five then you’re not worth signing” doesn’t apply for quarterbacks. They’re too rare to throw away a guy who’s #10 thinking you’ll somehow get lucky enough to find someone better.
