Campbell wasn’t even overpaid. He has consistently outperformed his contract actually. PFF has him on top 5 lists with players who make more than him often. There’s no way to even frame this like a cost saving move.

Even at his age his production is like, a fifth round pick is ROBBERY

I don’t think it’s good or anything but it’s pretty obvious what the objective is.

Though to be fair when I said the Jags should trade Campbell I thought they'd get at LEAST a third.

It wasn’t a good draft value move OR a good cost saving move. And I’ve already laid out that we LITERALLY have nothing else to save cap space for anymore. There’s no motive. Who are we trying to sign?

We’ve had so many cap casualties that at this point we’ll probably have to sign BACK more free agents to reach the minimum. Cutting Bouye AND Campbell makes no sense when Jalen already walked and Yannick isn’t signing.

    Tom Brady.

    The rivalry is back on

Dude is good but he’ll also be 34 at the beginning of the season. Maybe they could have gotten more at the trade deadline next year, but that 5th is probably in line with what they’d get as a comp pick and a year sooner. I don’t think it’s “good” value and I’d hate it as a fan that doesn’t want to tear it down (again), but I don’t think it’s that bad as far as pick value goes

I just can't imagine drafting young promising Josh Allen, putting him in a locker room with leader and hero Calais Campbell and malcontent Yannick Ngakoue, and trading Calais before Yannick

I think a year of his play and presence and a comp 5th later is MUCH more valuable than getting a 5th right now though, I do think it's outlandish to only get a 5th in return.

Feels like covid had the players thinking if they refused the offer, any future ones would be worse. Sucks.

Maybe that 5th is what we needed to trade up for Chase Young ///randallisms

I also think him retiring as a Jaguar would’ve meant something to a city that has had no meaningful player legacies since the mid 2000s.

Also though he was STILL A TOP 5 IDL in multiple categories. Why not at least let him finish the contract? That fifth doesn’t move the needle. (Not arguing with you, I know you’re on my side, just venting.)

Like. If you’re gonna make this move to save money, you do it BEFORE you piss off your young talent, not after. What are we gonna do now, beg Yannick Ngakoue to stay, after he already moved on and got excited for a better city than fucking Jacksonville? With the same money he already asked for a year ago??

*Bernie Sanders* I am once again asking who are we trying to sign with this money.

No one on our team currently. That leaves free agents; and Caldwell’s FA track record is bad. Chances are high the FA he signs are worse than keeping Bouye and Campbell in the first place. Those are the only two good ones he’s ever signed.

I await the "Byron Jones got how much? I like him, but not THAT much" posts/tweets

...as if there is really a big difference between say $14 million/year and $18 million/year

I wouldn't give Byron Jones 18 million a year but that's because I don't have 18 million a year. If I were an owner I'd probably do it but feels weird otherwise.

I think 14 to 18 is a huge difference, especially with how it affects the league and other contracts. Might not care now but when you're signing Kendall Fuller to 20 a year cause James Bradberry got 18 itll matter haha

14-18 is also a huge difference because teams who do that make a habit out of it. It’s never that one player. It’s a lot of overpaid players and poor long term projections. A few million overspent here, there, everywhere adds up.
