Like. I’m saying I’d rather have Brown than Kinlaw + a mid round pick. If we can trade down for an extra second I’d be all about it but a third or fourth is meh if Brown is still on the board.

We arent talking about games being “on the line” though haha. We are talking about, there is no “line” when you have no run defense you’re just gonna get blown out

Jags are not close enough to being competitive to start looking at things this way. Your logic makes more sense for the Eagles, a team within reach of being competitive again.

Same is true if you have no pass defense or linebackers or offense or, especially, coaching.

    Eagles? Competitive?

Did they finally get rid of Wentz?

Having a bad run defense doesn’t mean you’re gonna get blown out time and time again. If a RB gets beyond the defensive line, then a LB or S should be there to make a play. If not, again, the Jags have bigger problems to address than just one DT, albeit good, is going to solve, which is why I think they should trade down an accumulate an extra day two pick.

Also, the Eagles are close to being competitive again because the rest of their division is straight up ass or too dysfunctional to take advantage of one of the weakest divisions in the NFL.

The Eagles have a lot of glaring issues to address on their roster and I’m hoping they start to make an effort to fix those problems instead of making moves at the defensive line every season.

    Justin Jefferson - Malik Harrison

This is one example why I think the Jags should take a WR at 9 if they choose to stay there. They’re nothing like the Chiefs, but you can have a bad run defense and still stay in games or win them if you have the weapons to throw to for big gains in the passing game.

I don’t know anything about Harrison yet, but as far as Jefferson goes...I’d like that pick, but I wouldn’t be in love with it. I’d like the Eagles to draft a WR who is a proven commodity on the outside, especially with how much 12 personnel they use with Ertz and Goedert. What I’ve read about Jefferson game is ultimately appealing and I like the comps to him that I’ve seen, but I don’t think it’d be a great fit for the Eagles.

And they needed Mahones to be an elite QB to do it

    Minshew is not Mahomes

    It’s really not that simple.

If the DL doesn’t do their job then LB and S can’t attack the gaps and don’t get to the RB until he’s already got a head of steam. (Which is compounded by the fact that RB are much harder to tackle in the open field than in the trenches.) DL are the only people who can stop blockers from getting to a position of leverage, no one else has the strength to do that.

If the DL is bad, you can do your job right at LB and still not get the tackle until the RB already got 8 or 9 yards. Because now you have to dodge blockers that should’ve been occupied, impeded, or disrupted by a huge defender, and you also have to take “chase” angles rather than downhill angles which aren’t as efficient and use more energy.

The minute blockers get in front of a RB, which is the DL’s job to stop, you’ve already failed to “stop” the run and it becomes damage control. If you have to chase and sprint after runs for a whole game instead of being ahead of them, eventually fatigue sets in and the defense’s pursuit / reaction time / ability to shed blocks as a whole suffers. Which sends the game flow out of hand and makes it nearly impossible to keep up with the opponent’s score. The Chiefs win because Mahomes can put up 40 points on command whenever the defense gives up 30 and starts getting tired. Very few QB are capable of just doing that on a regular basis.

Like an 8 yard run on its own doesn’t sound so bad but it’s a death sentence to keep giving those up repeatedly. Your defense gets more and more tired every time the opponent gets a first down, so it’s a snowball effect that gets exponentially worse the more you struggle with it.

In a nutshell if your DL is bad at run defense, good LB and S can’t really make up for that because they’re already at a huge disadvantage in terms of angles & leverage, by the time they go for the tackle. And that in turn makes fatigue set in faster and makes the game get worse.

This is why DL are the most important part of a defense. How disruptive the DL can be, affects literally everything else.

Tying this into Brown... Jags do have pass rush but we only have one true run stopper and he’s a DE. (@CarpeElf Hence why I’d rather take Raekwon Davis than Neville Gallimore if we miss Brown.)

I'd rather take the better player. Could be Raekwon but I think it could be Gallimore too.
