Yeah a lot of those games went from still having a chance to win, to getting our asses beat because our run D, instead of stopping the bleeding, kept giving up easy first downs & long ass runs which is the fastest way to lose a game.

Any team that can’t cause disruptions in the backfield is gonna be a terrible team. DL is highly essential.

 

I mean we kinda did lose most those games because of that though.

It’s a ripple effect. Bad run D leads to a tired defense that is even less effective, and tilts time of possession; scoring chances; and momentum / playcalling leverage WAY in favor of the opponent

Bad run D makes it easier for the rest of their team to own you too.

 

We gave up 200 yards rushing to all 3 of our division rivals IN A ROW.

Texans, Titans and Colts all destroyed us mid season cause we could not even slow down the run.

 

If stopping the run is that important to you, then I hope the Jags trade down from 9 to draft a player who can do that but also accumulate more picks in the process to address other glaring needs on their roster

 

Bad linebackers dont help either. Or CB1 Tre Herndon

 

Jags should draft a player at 9 then to help keep them in closer games when they possess the ball. Maybe a WR like Lamb or Jeudy. Idk, I’d rather have a good WR when the game is on the line than a good DT.

Hayden and Herndon isn’t good but it’s more serviceable than what we have at IDL for sure.

DL is unequivocally more important than linebacker. Even good linebackers can’t do shit if DL can’t open gaps for them.

 

It's all bad and all why we lose

 

I’d rather have coverage linebackers in today’s NFL than linebackers whose focus is stopping the run

 

The word you're looking for is coach. we need an actual coach. We could take Young, Simmons, brown, and okudah and wash will still piss it away and Caldwell will piss them off

 

I mean, Brown is the only two-gap DT who also provides strong pass rush. He is far and away the best option. It’s not like Gallimore, Davis, or Kinlaw are even close.

 

Kinlaw is FIRMLY above Davis and Gallimore.

Gallimore is also firmly above Davis.

 

I mean if you can’t prioritize which problems are affecting you the most then you’re not gonna handle the rebuild properly

It takes some thinking outside the box. Yes they all contribute to the problem but there’s an order of operations. The root of most our defensive problems often comes back to an over aggressive line that does not address its run fits on any consistent basis at all.

That’s why our LB get swallowed by blockers, that’s why we give up 200 rushing yards and go down 3 scores in the third quarter... and also a lack of interior pass rush helps QB step up in the pocket and extend plays which hurts our coverage.

Gallimore is not firmly above Davis. They play different roles. Gallimore is not really a run stopper. It’s not just about “omg he’s faster and more explosive”

I said what I meant - Brown is the only one who can both two gap against the run AND generate consistent pressure. We need someone who can do both, we have neither.

 

Yeah they play different roles and Gallimore is better. Both can be true.

 

Washington’s DL isn’t even that good yet

It’s also bad logic to try to act like the inverse of what I said is the same context. I never said good DL makes corners good. I said bad DL makes corners worse. Those are not the same thing. If you have to cover for longer there’s more guesswork involved and you will give up more separation more often, it’s not exactly a subjective concept.

 

What corners are covering and giving up passes on run plays

 

Vikings are a great example of a strong DL making average corners look better than they are imo.

Man you really need to learn how to listen to someone else’s argument instead of trying to “gotcha” them. That’s the problem. You’re not trying to discuss you’re just trying to be right.

Exactly - they were still the 15th ranked pass defense because a strong DL made it harder for QBs to capitalize.

DL does both. We are talking about both. DL not hitting their run fits made it harder for LBs and S to defend the run; DL not getting interior pressure made it harder for DBs to cover. I want Brown because he is VERY GOOD at both. I’ve been talking about “both” the whole time haha.
