I love the Steelers Big Nickel approach to it. They run a "3-4", but, more than half their snaps are actually run with something that looks far closer to a 4-3 front.

yeah it’s interesting how many more run fits & alignments exist in a 3-4, I’d imagine 3-4s can be very confusing for an offensive line at times. Plus the ability to disguise blitzes, and send a different linebacker or CB every pressure snap.

I’ve always thought the Belicheck (/Flores) hybrid defense is an elite approach. Brady had people seeing the Patriots as an offensive team... but really the reason they dominate in the playoffs is, Belichick is an amazing defensive game planner who always seems to know how to shut down elite QBs.

their early superbowls were all defense, with their 2002-2005 secondary looking a lot like the Dolphins’ secondary looks now... hell, the 2002 Kurt Warner Rams and the 2005 Andy Reid Eagles are two of the best offenses I’ve seen in my lifetime, and the Pats beat them in low scoring games.

since then I think recently Belicheck has gotten the MOST out of some pretty average defensive rosters / developed a lot of mid round picks on defense because of that scheme.

there’s a role for every single kind of defensive player in that scheme.
