    there is one way out

    @preppyak, thoughts on this?

Unless he is cut or traded, this is probably the only option if Pittsburgh wants to able afford 52 actual football players next season...

I swear so many of the tv NFL guys love Darnold more after 3 years of being trash than they did when he was coming out in the draft.

I wonder if he'll do the Brady thing from a while back and willingly take less money to try and win a super bowl. The easiest option is to take his roster bonus, add some dummy/void years, and spread it out over like, 3 years. That saves $10mil on the cap. He could also just take a smaller roster bonus or something as well.

Steelers cap isnt actually that bad; their 2021 is tight, but they only have $50mil owed in 2022. Some dudes like Sutton/Hilton/etc could take guaranteed roster bonuses and medium sized signing bonuses to keep their 2021 number really low while still getting paid. Same for Watt, though they honestly may just sign him post-2021 season

  7. Todd was the biggest Darnold truther so this isn’t shocking.

Waiving the roster bonus would be a big deal. That alone could account for Sutton/Hilton combined or hell, even Dupree

It won’t matter or hurt him in the long run so it’s kind of a moot point, but why did Watson sign that contract extension last year with the Texans?

someone posted a tweet that asked this and basically all that has changed is BOB getting fired and now Watson wants out. He should have wanted out last year.

Again, him signing that contract doesn’t hurt him as far as getting traded, but why bother with that. Was it just to cash in at the moment? Obviously the team thought he was content with staying if he signs that only to have it disintegrate 12-months later

not to say he wouldn't have gotten it elsewhere, but its kind of hard to turn down $110 million guaranteed when its offered to you

also I am not sure all of the things with Easterby had come to light at that point but I don't remember exactly

Because of things like what happened with Dak. Secure the Bag, deal with the rest later.

Dude wasn’t any good in college. Doesn’t take care of the ball. Was bad for three years in the pros and folks still don’t want to write him off.

Tua has an overall okay rookie season with some good and bad moments. “I don’t like what I see. Time to give up on him.”

I don’t get that shit at all. lol

This x1000. It sucks to be unhappy, but its a lot easier to be unhappy with $110mil guaranteed if you suffer a career ending injury, rather than $10mil in his 5th year option (plus the specter of at least 2 more franchise tags after that if the team wanted).

The reality for any player is the only leverage they have is either

    a. A team cant afford to franchise tag them
    b. Their talent (or love among fans) is such that a team cant afford to go without them

There was never a scenario the Texans were gonna allow A to happen, so Watson was always gonna have to use leverage point B if he wanted out. Based on how his contract is structured (not a massive signing bonus, massive salaries dont hit til 2022), I'd actually argue Watson saw a 2021 as part of the plan

and the fact that his agent negotiated a pretty good contract that makes it relatively easy to get out of as well as a no-trade clause

Bama hate. Too good of a supporting cast in college. Not putting up Herbert stats. Not as tough as Burrow. I dunno. But I watched Tua’s game against Buffalo, which was his worst game by far, and I was just thinking Sam Darnold has this type of shitty ass game every time he plays and there are people who still love that dude and think the Jets shouldn’t draft a QB. It’s nuts to me.
