yeah I like that yours is more statistical regression analysis based lol

for me I do look at numbers... but if I flat out think one player was better than another, and just put up lower numbers because of external circumstances, I go with my gut

Wayne was consistent but had Manning and Luck the whole time... and I don’t think he had the elite athleticism nor the alpha-dog ball skills to put him above any of my top 20 guys. I think “elite compiler” is a category you value more than I do.

In my opinion Jimmy Smith was a faster Reggie Wayne who just never had nearly as good or consistent of QB play, and whose career got derailed multiple times to life threatening injuries and a cocaine addiction. That’s one strong example.

I also think as amazing as Michael Thomas is, every Drew Brees receiver was way better on the Saints than they were everywhere else and that’s a trend I expect to be at least slightly true for the elite or very good ones like Thomas, because it was true for Brandon Cooks and Jimmy Graham. It’s hard to rank him that much higher than like Brandon Marshall, who was THAT consistent everywhere he went in his career, no matter how mediocre the quarterback.

You may be onto something though, that i was wrong to not include Mike Evans. I mean now that I think about it he’s definitely above like, Anquan Boldin - though, I’m giving Boldin credit for being important in TWO Super Bowl runs on two teams

The only tier that matters to me:

The Put Aqib Talib on skates to win a Super Bowl MVP, and made the craziest catch in Super Bowl history as part of a 25 point comeback tier:

    Julian Edelman

I'm not confident it's the craziest catch in Super Bowl history, but it's def top 5.

I also think Torry Holt is overrated on your list. Very good but not in my top 10 by any argument. I maybe just don’t subjectively get as excited about route runners as “THATS MY BALL” receivers

that’s probably why Cris Carter and Torry Holt are swapped on our lists. That, and Carter never had a Kurt Warner.

    The rivalry is back on

That’s true, and honestly this specific example is probably both of us being biased towards our favorite team. It’s pretty arbitrary about where I split the retired guys for the mostly active guys, and it’d probably be more accurate to drop Wayne into that bottom group because the split between him and someone like Brandon Marshall is smaller than him and Issac Bruce. But it’s my list so I’m gonna draw the line at Wayne :P

That’s true, but I’m not quite ready to penalize him for not having a sample for what he looks like with a HOF QB yet. He’s the only player I grabbed with 5 years of experience or fewer but that’s just because of how good his peak has been, including a season that will likely go down as a top 3 receiving season of his era. I feel comfortable projecting him that, even with some regression, I’d expect that he, at worst, looks like OBJ’s profile in 3 years and at best is on a path towards sure fire HOFer

yeah this was kind of my thought process - I’m not gonna put most of the active guys ahead of elite guys who have certainty on how they finished their careers (because, hey, maybe they’re all Antonio Browns!), but should give credit where credit is due if you can take their current career and project out low WR1/high WR2 numbers for another few years and that book of work would pass a player. I honestly don’t know how to handle Cris Carter because his career followed like a reverse aging process (6 unspectacular seasons followed by an elite 8 season stretch) and he’s probably too low, but I feel comfortable saying that for sure with all of these other guys

Torry Holt is definitely one of those guys who looks better on a spreadsheet but GD are those numbers good. I just can’t ignore that he had the highest receiving yards/game of anyone during that era ahead of Harrison, Moss, and Owens and very significantly ahead of Marshall, Boldin, Smith, etc or that Carter’s second best season would have been Holt’s seventh best (and the amount of time between their peaks is actually less than you’d think)

Yeah I’m just so much more eye-test about how good I think a player is.

Carter could fucking catch anything. I honestly think he’s top 5 in terms of hands. I would say only Rice, Fitz, Calvin had equal or better hands than Cris Carter. And Carter had UPS and body control to grab those jump balls too. He’s a surefire elite WR of all time at the catch point, but with slightly less speed / route running skill than the other all time greats.

    Best hands of all time:

    1) Larry Fitzgerald
    2) Calvin Johnson
    3) Cris Carter
    4) Jerry Rice
    5) DeAndre Hopkins

I put Rice at 4 because of stick-um lol

6 is probably Steve Smith dude was strong af

Marvin Harrison could do some circus catches, but he was usually so open I honestly can’t remember if he had strong hands in traffic or not lol

Ugh please don’t. Just move up from our second round pick for Najee Harris / Travis Etienne or something if you’re gonna do that.

would be a REAL bummer to have abusers on our team day one of Urban Meyer. I don’t care how good he is, that’s a bad omen
