Sure, AV is a PFR stat:

Approximate Value (AV) method is an attempt to put a single number on the seasonal value of a player at any position from any year (since 1950).

Essentially, AV is a substitute for --- and a significant improvement upon, in my opinion --- metrics like 'number of seasons as a starter' or 'number of times making the pro bowl' or the like. You should think of it as being essentially like those two metrics, but with interpolation in between.

So, its not unlike say "QB Rating" in trying to evaluate QBs. Is it perfect? No. But you can pretty reasonably say that a group of 5 QBs all over 100+ QB rating are better than a group of 5 QBs in the 80s. And so, collectively, Thompsons hits were more consistent AND his misses were lower.

Its probably also telling that John Dorsey (Director of College Scouting in GB), Scott McCloughan (Director of College Scouting in SEA), and John Schneider (Director of Football Operations in GB) all served under him; and weirldly, they all were scouts for GB in the 90's
