I mentioned this the other day, but Taysom Hill has the 4th highest cap hit on the Saints next year

No joke this is the worst cap situation I can remember.

Brees retiring, cutting Taysom, Janoris, Jenkins, Davis, Cook, Peat, and restructuring Thomas, Kamara, Jordan, Onyemata, Easton, Kwon, and Armstead leaves them with -$55,000,000.

They'll just trade Tayson Hill to Houston for Watson, straight up.

If the floor is three firsts, I think that 36th (much like the NYJ 34th pick) would have be included.

It's going to be interesting if this goes down. Houston is going to get a haul from somebody.

When you hit a mothafucka, you hit that mothafucka Prestigious

I wouldn’t call it fucked. For them to have the longevity of competitive seasons they had under Brees is pretty damn impressive. Eventually every team has to strip it down and start over. I’d rather do it after 15 years and a Super Bowl ring than after 3-4 years like my team does lol

they won the Super Bowl like 12 years ago. Now granted, of course that was impressive and something to be proud of, but its not like they've won anything recently to make up for the mess of a cap situation they're in now

Yeeeeah no i'm not giving them a pass. Their cap is fucked and they got one ring out of it a middleschooler ago. For comparison, the Patriots scored 6 and have $60 million in space next year. It's possible to be good and competitive and not be reamed by cap hell's satan.

    The rivalry is back on

I mostly disagree. Obviously winning the Super Bowl every year would be great, but I wish there was a recognized threshold of success that is closer to “contender and fun to watch over the course of the year” as opposed to “if you didn’t win the Super Bowl, it was a failure.” Because the Saints definitely did the first one pretty consistently over the course of the past decade and a half and made it fun to be a Saints fan.

But like...they haven't even really been much of a contender. They've really been a favorite pre-season pick and usually a letdown more often than not in the last 20 years. They're 10-9 in their last 20 years of playoff runs and only even sniffed the championship game 3 years. I know it's better than a lot of teams, but it's also not like they've had unprecedented success where you just say "k, it was worth lighting the books on fire" lol

I guess, on the other hand since I'm gonna argue with myself now, they're fucked next year anyway with a QB so may as well just go full rebuild anyway lol

Saw online the Steelers were trading Jeff Reed and Mason Rudolph for Watson.

Also, teams paying more to players and extending their competitive windows is a thing that I’d prefer to praise as opposed to ridicule. The MLB alternative for teams like the Cubs and Cleveland where they take the mindset of “our window might be running out in 3 years so let’s sell off all our good players now” stinks

This is fair, and I agree. It just welcomes the conversation of "was it worth it" is i guess all I'm arguing.

    The rivalry is back on

    the Saints’ last 4 years:

    2020 - 12-4, #2 seed, ran out of steam
2019 - 13-3, lost a silly tiebreaker for a bye and lost by close enough that a no-call may have been the difference
2018 - 13-3, lost in the playoffs in OT on a very bad call
    2017 - 11-5, lost on a fluke play

that is a contending team that just didn’t get the ideal outcome

yeah I gotcha. If the question is “do you sell Brees at his age 35 year and try to get assets because this team has run its course”, I’m glad the answer is no. If the question is “was it wise to take the ‘we’re 1 player away’ mentality and completely kneecap the 2-3 years after the Brees window ends”, that’s debatable, especially since it didn’t ultimately work

I think ideally it's fine as a fan to ask to ask to play in a Superbowl every 10-15 years. That should be the expectation. Saints have three more years to get to another one.

Like am I upset when the Falcons or Chargers suck? No. But I hate that the Chargers literally haven't made a Superbowl.

See, this is where i'm spoiled. I don't want one out of every 10-15 years. I wanna be in the AFC Championship ALWAYS. I understand it's not reasonable, but i do think the idea of building a sustainable program that competes, really competes, year in and year out should be the goal. The Pats did it, the Chiefs are now doing it, I wanna be next again.
