In fairness, most coordinators fail too.

Elliott does a good job with the whole offense.

So do the other three people who run the offense...

  4. In three years when we look back at this argument, both Randall and @CarpetElf will claim they were correct about Meyer

Dude, I’m done with this argument haha. Urban Meyer is a risky hire when we have people who have already proven they understand NFL schemes on a competitive level. That is my opinion. He does a good job coaching fundamentals but his passing game strategic concepts are over simplified and he gets away with it because of outstanding recruiting.

That recruiting advantage will not exist in the NFL so I am skeptical of his ability to operate a more complex offense that accounts for more thorough coverage / run support, and harder to predict play calling, in the NFL.

You can have a different opinion, but I see this as Shad Khan being offered the chance to take a reasonable risk or take a dice rolling risk and he’s rolling the dice.

Yes, an impressive list, but don’t oversell it... he’s also been the coach of 3 highly recruited teams over 20 years so let’s not act like just on sheer volume alone the guy wouldn’t have some studs

players like Harvin and Samuel have to be used in very particular ways also, his WRs generally don’t translate to most NFL offenses, with McLaurin and Michel Thomas being the exceptions

The mental gymnastics here is astounding. Urban is not impressive because great recruiting but Tony Elliott is NFL ready.

you're saying they don't translate. i'm saying he's taking players that aren't that good and using them to their fullest potential and i don't see why that's a bad thing. Also like, if he's so great with players who are complete failures in the NFL then how are we just going to assume he'll be terrible with players who are NFL caliber??

The word you're looking for is versatile and its why you love LT.

Urban Meyer is a fine football coach, do I think it was the BEST hire, no. But it's a fine hire. He'll fix that culture at least.

Also isn't he like...beloved down there? There's something to be said of having the fan base actually excited about their new coach and quarterback.

Spurrier’s time in DC sucked because of his own doing. He had tons of say. Shit, he thought he and his system were so good he could win with Shane Matthews and Danny Wuerffel. He wanted those guys.

If Randall is saying he doesn't like the Urban hire because he thinks he'll stink or he's unproven, I disagree.

If Randall is saying he doesn't like the Urban hire because there were better coaches available, I agree.

you always be oversimplifying my point so you can make a neat little quip about it. It’s much more about what they actually do with those players on the field and what concepts they teach them.

Memories are nice, but that's all they are. Prestigious

Look, I hate Meyer, but I’d bank on him succeeding as a NFL coach over a lot of other college coaches. So many come into the league and have their set style and scheme they feel like they MUST run. Meyer is very adaptable when it comes to that, and it’s a big reason he had so much sustained success.

I’m not sure “versatile” is the word to describe a WR who primarily functions underneath the coverage

it’s a different style, a valid style, of WR...but it has clear limitations

  18. Urban Meyer is more likely to quit halfway through the season than change the culture in Jacksonville haha

Another reason to hate him. Hating Meyer as an offensive coach though is bananas.

I'll bet anyone here $10 that Meyer makes it at least three years and the Jags have a winning season in that timeframe.

I’m highly skeptical. I don’t hate how he wins in college. But I do hate when coaches try to bring that shit to the NFL and fail because of it.

Also why does the "Urban doesn't translate players" apply to him but not the Clemson offensive coaches?

most Jags fans I know hate the idea of Meyer and associate him with Tim Tebow

Yes, I too hate when coaches try and bring versatility and adaptability into the NFL.
