Bettis is absolutely overrated and that’s fine. He’s good, but he’s a Hall of Famer at a non-QB position that you’d struggle to place in the top 10% at their position at any time that he was in the league (which would be top 3 for RBs). Coupled with the bad YPC, he’s very good for what he was, but just had counting stats in an era that was particularly kind to RB stats, has a ring for anyone who uses that as a decision maker, and played for a prominent team for a number of years

As an Eagles fan who’s fandom peaked in the 90s I’m biased with scar tissue but Emmitt Smith was one of the best 2 or 3 running backs I’ve watched. It was infuriating watching him slip tackles.

 

If I’m picking a prototypical hand the ball off back you have to consider Eric Dickerson. His stats are insane and watching his highlights he looks like he was incredibly hard to tackle.
