Didn’t realize the patriots were going to be that good on the cap. Where’s Tampa?

With the knowledge that some of these numbers dont include signing any of a teams own FAs, and that some of the really bad numbers can be easily wiped away by restructures/cuts, this is loosely where teams stand. They are assuming a cap number of $175mil, which is likely the absolute low point. If it comes in break even with 2020 (~200mil), then pretty much everyone but PHI and NO are about even

    1 Jacksonville Jaguars $77,348,552
    2 New York Jets $62,914,892
    3 Indianapolis Colts $60,042,959
    4 New England Patriots $58,679,836
    5 Washington Football Team $40,513,860
    6 Cincinnati Bengals $34,324,943
    7 Tampa Bay Buccaneers $28,200,683
    8 Cleveland Browns $24,381,179
    9 Baltimore Ravens $24,264,089
    10 Miami Dolphins $25,634,512
    11 Los Angeles Chargers $22,035,869
    12 Seattle Seahawks $15,090,563
    13 San Francisco 49ers $14,793,293
    14 Dallas Cowboys $18,035,619
    15 Denver Broncos $16,245,259
    16 Arizona Cardinals $6,827,700
    17 Tennessee Titans $6,773,950
    18 Detroit Lions $6,552,495
    19 Carolina Panthers $7,428,935
    20 Buffalo Bills $1,241,122
    21 Chicago Bears ($186,755)
    22 New York Giants ($2,284,491)
    23 Kansas City Chiefs ($16,430,336)
    24 Las Vegas Raiders ($17,079,972)
    25 Minnesota Vikings ($14,265,367)
    26 Houston Texans ($20,348,826)
    27 Los Angeles Rams ($21,360,598)
    28 Pittsburgh Steelers ($21,912,231)
    29 Green Bay Packers ($24,440,451)
    30 Atlanta Falcons ($32,394,161)
    31 Philadelphia Eagles ($74,086,351)
    32 New Orleans Saints ($99,840,508)

Couple teams that should stand out, Seattle, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, and Chicago have those cap numbers off having ~35 players...while the Jaguars are at their cap number with 57 under contract.

For example, the Steelers are that that cap number without resigning Conner, JuJu, Dupree, Sutton, Villanueva, Feiler, Hilton, Banner, Alalu, Davis, Berry, and Hawkins...and without RFA tendering Spillane at least. So, thats a MASSIVE chunk of their defense, and basically their whole O-line but DeCastro and Pouncey. But Ben retiring, a few restructures, and not keeping Vance alone gets them to +10mil cap instead of -$21mil.

Jags might be in the best cap position I've ever seen for a team; they could clear another $25mil in cap space without blinking just on aging people and restructures alone. Cam Robinson might be the only FA they have under the age of 30 who'll cost money

those numbers also don't list 2020 cap rollovers

as an example, Miami has like $14 million to rollover from 2020 if they wanted to

The Jets will probably have closer to $85M-$90M after some cuts

God, I hope Ben retires. I know there were a lot of problems last night, but Ben's throws were all over the place, and most of the loss should be firmly on his shoulders.

seeing the Saints at $100 million over is hilarious

now I know Brees is probably gone which opens a good chunk of that but still

also interesting that Taysom Hill has the 4th highest cap hit on the Saints in 2021 when you take Brees out of the equation....thats insane.

Perfect time for colbert to step down and let the next gm rebuild the roster once ben retires next season

They do, actually. Spotrac does the calculation off $175+2020 rollover. I also suspect it doesnt include a lot of unlikely to be earned bonuses that got earned late in the season...so, like I said, definitely not a perfect encapsulation, but useful to see that 2 teams are very f'd, and maybe a half dozen teams are hoping the cap is $200mil instead of $175mil

ahh okay yeah, didn't realize they were using $175 as the base number instead of $200

Yeah, I'll be really, really stunned if they actually cut it to $175mil. But thats the running assumption of most cap sites

Jags have way too much money to treat Josh Allen / DJ Chark like they treated Yannick Ngakoue and Ramsey. PLEASE resign my dudes.

With all of the cap casualties, I don’t see how this team gets better next year. Solid chance Ben Is just as bad or worse next year. I don’t think you can put a band aid on the offense by just drafting an RB really high because the offensive line needs a lot of work too
