so it’s the other way around then lmao. Now we are getting a QB with a great understanding of basic coverages but talking about hiring a coach that doesn’t know ow to prepare him for the next level of meta strategy. I think it could stunt his growth. Lawrence is ready to learn about disguised blitzes and things like that. I want to take advantage of that with a coach who is well informed about how to strategically respond. Better mentors will help him reach his true potential.

My point is that I’d hire a high profile college coach if we already had a roster that knows how to play in the NFL. Cause then the college coach could possess other intangibles and motivation skills that really inject life into them, like with Carroll. And hell. Bill O’Brien was like this at first.

That’s when I would be most likely to take that risk. But I don’t want to teach a young roster how to deal with NFL level strategy puzzles with a coach who still has to learn that from scratch himself.

This projecting and assuming. You have no clue if Meyer can develop a QB in the NFL.

...do you think that Carroll inherited a good roster?

i think the front office built one very quickly yeah. LOB defense and Russell Wilson is pretty dope. Trading for Marshawn Lynch is pretty dope. They got good fast because Carroll was able to capitalize on an influx of talent. He also has a QB with *extremely rare* pocket presence and mobility and that’s helped him do a lot of crazy things with shitty pass blocking that even most mobile QBs can’t do

So couldn't you reason that maybe with the most cap space and draft picks we could also assemble a good roster?

And things like Carroll assuming that in the biggest play of the Super Bowl, a simple slant / wrinkle play would work against Belichick lmao. That’s so college to me. That’s the first thing he’s coaching his DB’s to do on the goal line, is blow up any WR that looks like they’re setting a pick

Carroll is not the greatest play caller in the world

There's also the added fact that Pete Carroll is the one that assembled that roster lol

i'm gonna go ahead and make the very controversial assessment that people with only NFL experience also call shitty plays

I think it’s hit or miss and the Seahawks really hit on a lot of defensive talent and Wilson. I hope we hit a lot as well. But imagine if we did that AND had a guy who dominated as an NFL OC as our coach

I credit Carroll for his late round finds like Richard Sherman but... Wilson was a complete accident haha. No way anyone thought a QB was that good and let him fall to round 3.

of course it's hit or miss. it's all hit or miss. we could hit or miss with a coach too haha.

Not reading all of the argument because I'm lazy, but I think Meyer is a better recruiter than coach which is super important in college but don't know if any of that skill really translates to the nfl

The quiet part I’m not saying out loud is Pete Carroll might have sucked again if he didn’t get really fortunate with his first few offseasons. Since then he’s been awful at drafting lol and Wilson really bails him out of a lot of his shortcomings by throwing bombs / running for 20 yards on third and long.

This is quite possibly the worst take on here, given the context.

I feel like I could get Randall to believe anything so long as it might counter something he's trying to argue.

Nah, what actually happens is we agree on 85% of stuff but you treat the other 15% like it’s unacceptable lol.

To elaborate, I'm more so saying something like "why would you have Tebow sit in the pocket and be that kind of passer when he's clearly better at being a dual-threat guy". Not like "why would you ever have him do that" just more along the lines of why change the guy you have if you can win with him like that.

"you *verb* like *adjective*" is a sentence structure that needs to be banned from your vocabulary

Yeah but we were talking about being able to read a defense. Why even play a real QB at all if you aren't going to ask them to do that? Just throw James Robinson back there, I'm sure he has a decent enough arm to make the throw and not read the defense.

And this right here is exactly my point lol. I have no clue. I do have a clue about some of our other options’ ability to develop NFL Quarterbacks and concepts. So Meyer isn’t in that same discussion for me.

Calling Tebow a dual threat is a stretch

quarterback was literally not his best position lol

If you have no clue, you should refrain from speaking in absolutes like "he doesn't know how to do X and Y and Z"

And we should refrain from speaking in absolutes like “here’s $12M per season to have this job instead of four much more proven NFL coaches” lol

Like if we take Saleh or Eberflus developing a QB is still a concern but building a strong NFL defense is also a rare find so I just sacrifice that.

with Meyer it’s like... he’s an offensive coach.... but it only consistently translates for offensive linemen. Maybe also tight ends.
