Urban's job in college is not to teach people how to do a job for someone else.... idk why you keep bringing this up as if it means anything. Most of his QBs can't read - still had two undefeated seasons and three titles. Idk how you look at that and go "wow he sucks" instead of "wow, imagine if he had even a remotely decent QB"

 

So like, what's the deal with Pete Carmichael? Why is it every year teams interview the singer from the Wonder Years instead of him? Is he just like the worst person in the world or something?

 

Not teaching QBs how to respond to cover 2 or cover 3 is alarming from an NFL perspective. It’s just like, why not?

why does Tim Tebow have a shitty throwing motion he’s been playing quarterback for years?

what faith does that give me that he’ll suddenly do that for a rookie QB at an NFL level of competition with much better defenses? There are plenty of college coaches who do teach the basics, it’s not a college wide problem, so I have literally no relative comfort with Meyer being able to do so.

 

Success in college for coaches or players isn’t indicative for how they’ll do in the NFL. Might as well be a different sport.

 

College teams have 1 or 2 NFL caliber players usually so it’s a whole other beast.

I’d much rather have a head coach with NFL experience as an assistant/coordinator than a head coach from college.

 

I don't care that he won necessarily. But the argument of "all his QBs suck" is pretty easily countered with "amazing, they all suck and yet he dominated, imagine if he had a good one"

 

I think there’s a time and a place to hire a successful college coach and take a chance, and that’s when your roster is good but unmotivated

Like, if you’re in the quarterback development stage of your franchise, then you need a guy who specializes in developing quarterbacks.

it’s not rocket science to me. I’m drawing a very simple conclusion. The hire does not fit our needs. We have to create a new team culture from scratch because player acquisition is crucial. I don’t trust Meyer to do that either.

@CarpetElf I think your whole argument rests on making a false parallel when you say “he had bad quarterbacks and still won!!” To me that’s like so what? Bad quarterbacks win in college all the fucking time. That’s why I bring up Spurrier and Saban. That doesn’t mean Jack diddly shit, the NFL has a whole different level of consistency and whole field coverage on defense than college does, as @Dinosaurs Dish said it’s almost a different sport how offense must be approached conservatively and all options considered. A coach that just skipped the basics cause he got by on other metrics in college is very unlikely be ready to develop a rookie QB from scratch in the NFL.

That's not really my whole argument but that's a fair counterpoint. I mean, no coach has won with bad QBs with the same consistency but fair.

 

Can't have it both ways. Burrow is either the second coming or too soon to tell.

 

No no I'm talking about Jeaux Brady haha. How we can write off two decades of Meyer but one season of Brady and he's the #1 guy on the market.*
