I also don't. my main thing is, what makes Urban a worse prospect than say... Matt Campbell?

Eh, I feel like Spurrier is a perfect proxy for Meyer; the only real argument you'd be able to make is the NFL and NCAA styles have merged so much that the transition isnt as big anymore. Saban's a little tougher both because he had success in the NFL initially AND because it seems clear he's an even better coach now. And Kelly, he's basically Kingsbury or any other flash in the pan "unique style" guy.

I'd be far more worried that Meyer is gonna end up creating a toxic NFL locker room than I am whether he can win games

This is my only concern. It's a HUGE concern. But it's my only one.

all I have to add to this discussion is

    fuck Nick Saban forever

Yeah certainly. Doesn’t mean every good college coach goes that way though. Carroll did but he definitely does a lot of shit that makes me think he wouldn’t be good without Wilson

Saban and Spurrier also were both at odds with the front office. I'm gonna go ahead and assume that, given the fact that we don't have a front office, that won't be an issue here. Considering that "are you drafting Trevor Lawrence" is the key to the castle and that the former two clashed over QB concerns, which we probably won't have.

Well good thing he has Wilson. Good thing we'll have Lawrence.

I think Pete Carroll is probably the example of what Nick Saban would be if he went to the NFL today. Carroll made the playoffs twice before going back to college...and then after several years of success there, came back fully ready.

Like all I’m saying is we’d be taking a much bigger risk, for more money, than if we hired Arthur Smith... who I feel pretty safe from watching his work in Tennessee that he will know what to do with Lawrence

    "for the money"

what for the money. there is no for the money. it doesn't matter how much we pay him at all haha

oh yeah and this lmao. Pete Carroll WAS an NFL coach before he went to USC. So not even a good comparison @CarpetElf

it absolutely does. It sends a message to the rest of the coaches in the league that you value vague potential more than you value hard NFL experience and results.

That's probably the best comparison you're gonna get though

So we can’t compare Meyer cleanly to anything. How is that supposed to make me feel safer about signing him instead of Saleh or Smith or Bienemy or Eberflus

there are literally four preferable options out there. Five if Brady doesn’t go to Houston

If you prefer Bienemey over Meyer then shit idk dude haha

  19. It's nice having a good stable coach

Good example tbh. Kliff is not failing because of his college scheme (which, btw, was FAR worse for translating into the NFL than Urban's), he's failing because of all of the other aspects of being a head coach

whats wrong with it? He’s got tutelage from Reid. That whole organization chooses to enable Hill / Hunt / Clark not just Bienemy. At least we know that guy is good enough that Mahomes told Watson to campaign for him.

Bienemy's only experience as an actual OC was in college where he was very bad at it. Bienemey is just Matt Nagy.

Depends how you look at it honestly. Kliff calls mostly air raid and that’s odd for the NFL in one way... but then you have Meyer QBs not understanding how to read basic coverages 3 years into their NFL careers

wait was he not OC in KC?

Reid is the primary play caller.
