Why is it ONLY the Jaguars being linked to Urban Meyer

why do we have to be the dumb team

 

We aren't. The Chargers and Lions have been as well.

 

Pursuing Urban Meyer reeks disgustingly of “smartest man in the room” syndrome. And that guy is usually actually the dumbest guy in the room.

They’re not bad takes. My take has consistently been that he has not shown me anything NFL and I don’t want to pay stupid money without the guarantee that the guy knows how to develop a QB

 

Our future is very fragile. I want to know from the outset we’re getting Lawrence and our coach knows what to do with him.

A handful of other highly touted college coaches have failed in the NFL for similar reasons

 

Start naming college coaches who have failed in the NFL who have had as much success as Urban.

Steve Spurrier, Nick Saban, Chip Kelly off the top of my head

 

Spurrier and Saban largely failed for the same reason, though Saban also was not on Urban's level when he went to the Dolphins. Kelly has never been on Urban's level. Kelly was never even on Saban pre-Alabama level.

 

I just think signing a college coach whose quarterbacks never translate is a huge risk. You’re betting that they can suddenly coach differently than they’ve already coached for 20 years and developed an ego about. That’s absurd to me when we have options with recent quality NFL quarterbacks and experience with NFL play calling to speak of. I feel like the only time you hire a “motivator” type from college just based on their ability to pump up a team, is if you already have a rock solid roster with a decent QB developed and the problem was strictly coaching. I DEFINITELY don’t want to do that the only chance we’ve ever gotten to draft an elite prospect at QB. I DEFINITELY don’t trust building a team from scratch in Meyer’s image.

 

I really don't get the criticism of "he manages to go undefeated at multiple schools with bad quarterbacks". Is that supposed to make me not trust his coaching ability?

If we're picking from college, Pat Fitzgerald and Matt Campbell should be the first two options but then again, they've never had a QB translate to the NFL

 

Counterpoint: “but he’s won a lot in college” is not a strong argument against any of my concerns

 

I think you’re right. Wisenhunt was OC. I don’t remember what Grimm was. Then Wisenhunt took Arizona’s HC position.
I think Rivera and Tomlin were the finalists for the position.

I legit think it’s just much more possible to win a lot with a bad QB in college than in the NFL *shrug* and I don’t think that’s baseless at all

 

I don't wanna be a dick, but here's the number of coaches who won three National Championships and then made the jump to the NFL:

 

Decent at both.

 

youre not being a dick. I just don’t think there’s a direct link between college success and ability to coach in the NFL.

 

Guarantee 100 percent of these things were also said about Pete Carroll in 2010.
