Just cause the NFLs branding is lazy doesnt mean it actually matters. A team cant pay a player in ownership shares, so they're literally not "the franchise" in any way, and as we've seen with Tom Brady, the "face" can move towns at any moment. Why give owners the ability to pawn off more blame on players than needed?

Its precisely the notion that Haskins is "CEO or face" that lets the blame go all on him; when in reality the team has all the power (the WFT can cut him the second that footage aired and did not have to play him in Week 16...dude didnt even finish the game). QBs are basically WH Press Secretaries...no actual power on policy and designed to just take all the shit as a distraction.

In reality, Watson is pissed right now...he has two options, play for the Houston Texans or retire and earn -$27,000,000. He cant submit the teams draft picks, cant execute trades, cant restructure contracts...the list goes on. And by the way, if he could, he'd absolutely suck at it and the Texans would be worse off.

I think preppy is right except for the very rares instances in which Dave is right, this being one of those times. You dont have to do what he says but at least humor the guy and interview his ideal candidate, especially since its just via zoom! That's probably the worst part - they don't need to fly him out or anything.

That said, if Pete Carroll were to retire I 100 percent have Russell Wilson in that room when hiring a coach. I'd give him and Rodgers total Lebron treatment. Mahomes as well.

The NFL100 is all the proof you need that players are bad at evaluating talent. We're still talking "jUjU shOuldNt cAlL tHe bRoWNs tRash" in the same breath we'd give any player personnel control?

Also, Tom Brady would have 1000% covered up Aaron Hernandez's murders if it got him one more Super Bowl.

For the record I wouldn't give them personnel control or anything like that. I'd allow input for things directly relevant to them if they're of a certain talent level. Like this free agent class, I'd definitely defer to Rodgers or Wilson on which he would prefer out of Godwin or JuJu. I'd never talk to him about anything defensively or on the offensive line but for his weapons and his offensive scheme, I'd get input if we're talking about like a Mahomes or Watson. Wouldn't automatically listen but if I was torn 50/50 on a player or coach then yeah I'd use them as a tiebreaker. Rodgers I'd lean on more. He's old enough to have been in high school with (or older than) 1/3 of the league.

Ha, Im just hammered and causing fights...my initial edit to your post was gonna be "I cant give Russell Wilson personnel control, he wouldn't risk enraging god to fuck Ciara, why would he mess with the NFL tampering window".

But I would for sure give a Mahomes a say in the same way that I'd give a Lebron a say in his team. He's gonna end up with it anyway by sheer force of ability.

It's also not like Watson asked the Texans to interview his high school coach. Bieniemy has been rumored as a head coaching candidate for years and has literally interviewed for every other HC opening in the league. They should be interviewing him even if Watson didn't ask for it

I wouldn’t give them control, it I’d def welcome their input and take it seriously instead of just blowing them off out of laziness.

Speaking of, Jacoby Brissett to NYJ is one of my favorite fits (that no one else cares about) of the QB carousel. If they draft QB, Brissett is the happy medium between being able to start a few games before the rookie is ready and no one being upset when he’s inevitably benched for someone better. If they don’t draft QB, Darnold has missed enough time in the past that having a vet behind him makes sense.

From what I’ve noticed because I can’t help but read the replies, Jets fans hate eberflus and would lose their shit if he was head coach. From colts fans criticisms I’ve seen, he seems eerily similar to todd bowles so it’s basically a perfect fit.

my two cents is that Eberflus is a very good DC (definitely a top 10 DC in the league, probably a top 5), and there are things about him that I think will translate well to a HC gig if/when he gets one. The players seem to love him and his whole thing about “loafs” and getting playing time based off of going all out on every play in games and practice seems to resonate. He also handled the whole McDaniels situation well and seems to have strong leadership skills.

His overall success is largely going to hinge on what offensive play-callers he brings in and that’s a little scary, but not necessarily a deal-breaker.

He also is an objectively bad fit with Houston because he largely schemes a 4-3 defense built on speed and getting to the ball, and Houston doesn’t have the players needed to run that successfully nor do they have the draft assets to successfully turn that entire defense over in 2 years. With the Jets, they’re basically in tear the whole thing down mode so Flus can change the scheme and that’s not a big deal. The Chargers seem like an ideal fit if they want to keep Steichen around (and if Flus is cool with that) because they have a similar enough scheme on defense and the players to execute on it, plus would have a strong leader (who is hopefully a better game manager) that is coming from a successful experience of working well with a staff that didn’t hire you and could hopefully translate that back and also isn’t going to get in the way of what’s been working with Herbert on the offensive side of the ball.
