Twitter wasn't a thing yet for Smith and barely a thing for Stafford so we didn't have this easy of access to all the hot takes

Memories are nice, but that's all they are. Prestigious

Stafford also was playing for literally one of the worst teams of all time, behind an awful line with just Calvin as a legit threat

fun to note that his 9th game was the incredible game against the Browns where he won it single handedly for us after getting annihilated by two defenders

I hope we get him. Would be such a huge cultural change after Patricia sucked the life out of this team.

He strikes me as a very Mike Tomlin style pick; I cant truthfully say that Tomlin is a great schemer in any way, but motivation alone dude is a god. Saleh strikes me as that type as well.

There's a rare few coaches like a Shanahan where their scheme is such that people WANT to follow. Everyone else has to find ways to motivate.

Saleh + McDaniel is gonna be good. I'd love them.

True but I think the point was also that this kind of patience and nuance doesn’t exist in today’s fan climate. You can lose but you have to put up stats, everyone is obsessed with stats

Small handed Alex Smith got (rightfully) shat on for years. He was a known failure til he ended up in KC. Truthfully, its a miracle he got a 4th or 5th season of play...if he was operating under the current salary structure where a team had to use a 5th year option on him, he'd have been Trubisky'd

    edit: Fun Comparison

    Player A (80 games): 1290/2177 (59.3%), 6.6 Y/Att, 81TD, 63INT, 79.1 rating.

    Player B (78 games): 1562/2634 (59.3%), 6.7 Y/att, 103TD, 75INT, 80.6 rating

Player A is Smith in San Fran, Player B is Blake Bortles

As crazy as Jim Harbaugh is, he saved Alex Smith.

Caldwell helped stafford get a lot better, right?

Jim Harbaugh is a good coach. It's much harder to be good in college when your team isn't stacked though. At least in the NFL they are all professionals or human turnstile Matt Kalil.

Yeah, he greatly helped Stafford and his decision making. It neutered him a little bit at first because he wasn’t taking any risks at all, but eventually he started to again and found a good medium

and then Caldwell started going super conservative play calling, more than before, and he was fired. After that, Patricia came in convinced you don’t need to throw further than five yards and completely neutered our team

I dream of what Stafford could’ve been with good coaching

Stafford came into an 0-16 team. The stats are bad but you could tell the talent was there and he was improving week to week. I think that’s why people didn’t freak out and generally liked him, everyone knew that was a husk of a team and for a 21 year old to stay afloat alone was impressive

That Browns game said it all. Dude was a leader, and proved the team should be built around him

a shame the franchise let him down

    The rivalry is back on

important to note that I think the most recent of these besides Allen and Tua was 2012 and comparing stats like this across decades loses context
