apparently the top graduate schools in my field (aside from MIT) are Carnegie and Georgia Tech. Really wanna aim high and try to get into one of them.

 

My boss went there. But she did public policy so I doubt she knows anyone on the tech side of it.

frat parties are terrible. I didn’t drink or smoke weed until my junior year when I moved off campus because I had such a bad experience at my first couple parties.

so many garbage dudes harassing and pressuring drunk girls and acting like it’s their right to behave that way. I got into a fight at one college party because a dude wouldn’t leave my female friend alone and I never went to another one.

we grew up in a very rape-culture era. I realize more and more how alarming it is that people just sort of accepted that as “oh that’s just how guys are!!!! Girls shouldn’t get drunk at parties if they don’t want to get abused!!” In high school / college I was often an outcast in any random group of guys (like PE class or intramural sports or musicians that played shows in their garage, whatever)... because I didn’t wanna participate in that disgusting shit.

At worst my current college U of Maryland is #8 and #9 in those categories.

 

if you were unaware and this is in your goals/wheelhouse, GT has an online masters of data science that is under $10k and it’s probably the best value grad degree I’ve seen

 

Yeah all their programming / infosci degrees are offered like that!

But then also the in-person programs give you opportunities to actually work on real projects for major companies in the field, which to me sounds like a way to step right into a great job after graduation. So that’s interesting too. A lot of them offer contracts that say we will reimburse your costs of graduate school if you work for us. At that point it’s just, trying to find a company that’s not as evil as Facebook / Google / Amazon lol.

Georgia Tech’s reputation for coding-related graduate programs is literally right there behind MIT, and it specializes in different things too. MIT is more renowned for the super high tech stuff like AI, biometrics, robotics but Georgia Tech is basically #1 in what I want to study.

 

As if getting Covid wasn’t bad enough, my grandmother had a stroke tonight. It people could send prayers, or good vibes or whatever you believe in her way I’d appreciate it.

 

My uncle, who walked 10 miles a day and was the most anal retentive health person I know had a heart attack last week and then they barely kept him alive during the week because they found out he had blood cancer and all sorts of other shit and he died tonight a few hours after being removed from ICU / some or the life support things. His wife has Alzheimer’s so bad that after his heart attack, where they took him away my ambulance, she forgot he was gone and thought he was at a doctors appointment so I feel bad for my cousin who has now lost her dad on Christmas and has to deal with what’s left of her mom.

Ever since I was in middle school I never wanted to grow old and said I would “take care of things myself” by the age of 70 and it’s been wild listening to my mom and stepdad and other family members talk the same way the last few days. My grandpa, grandma and aunt all had/have really bad Alzheimer’s so it’s definitely super genetic in our family and after seeing all three spiral down and two die the last two christmases and now my uncle thing Christmas leaving my aunt basically unable to live on her own for any length of time I think it’s safe to say my entire family my “take care of themselves” by 70 because none of us want to live like that or make others have to take care of us.

my family has always been quirky when it comes to death. We don’t get sad and funerals aren’t bleak. They just are what they are. But none of us wanna go out via Alzheimer’s, fuck that.
