Bringing up legitimate counter examples is also not a straw man lol

ben has actually declined. He used to be great at anticipation.

and I’m sorry are we calling Eli Manning “good” now lol

Yeah, dude was a lifetime linebacker coach who never coached ol before lol the opposite of castillo, basically

Also whisenhunt has always had atrocious ol play so it’s not that surprising, I guess

they’re slanted counter examples. You’re literally just cherry picking bad QBs whose only skill is anticipation. That’s not really a neutral argument

Are we being delusional and thinking Eli Manning wasn't good? Great? No. Good? Undeniable. He won two super bowls. Call him whatever you want but what metric are you using for winning if not that?

I never said that anticipation is the *only thing a QB needs. I said there’s a lot of ways to be a good QB but anticipation is one of the necessary traits

Of course it isn't a neutral argument lol I'm disagreeing. And no, I'm "cherry picking" examples that don't fit your point.

Like you can have any mix of skills and playing style but you gotta have pocket presence and you gotta have a good sense of anticipation. I don’t think I’m saying anything subversive here. This applies to all kinds and styles of QBs

Yeah Eli was good. Never great, except in some big moments. There were quite a few years when he was bad though.

you’re cherry picking QB who make shitty reads and take shitty sacks and have shitty arms and saying SEE ANTICIPATION ISNT EVERYTHING. Well duh. That’s a dishonest way to respond to my point. I never said it’s everything. What I said was, QBs won’t succeed without it. Obviously they need more than just that skill to succeed though.

Wasn’t nicks awful without manning? He was always the wr1 for the giants

counter examples are not cherry picking lol.

It's not dishonest, it's an actual counter.

It disproves a point I didn’t even try to make.

Again. Not saying anticipation will automatically make a QB succeed. I am saying lacking anticipation will probably make a QB fail. Those are two entirely different statements

okay, fine, Eli was good. I’m wrong to say h wasn’t. But I will respond by saying that SB winning throw to Mario Manningham in 2011 was an anticipation throw *shrug*

like anticipation is how you convert third and long when the opponent already knows you have to throw. Its how you fit the ball in the end zone when there’s hardly any space between defenders. I really feel like it should be obvious how key it is to make reads ahead of time before the defense has time to adjust

Still gonna go with there's more than one way to win. You don't need to be great at anticipation throws. Mariota literally kept them in the game because he made anticipation throws. Herbert won the game on a rushing TD because he didn't throw with anticipation.

Apparently the most receiving yards in a 3 game stretch by a TE in history. That division is stacked at the position.

Not that it matters where I stand on this but I do agree it will be very difficult to be consistently good in the nfl if you can’t throw with anticipation. Yes there are more ways to win but you’re likely not winning consistently because of good qb play if they can’t throw with anticipation.

I don't think these QBs fail because they don't know where to put the ball I think they fail because they can't put the ball there.

you’re not gonna consistently beat good teams like that though. You can take advantage of an undisciplined defense but that’s really more on them. A defense that’s doing their job well can take away most the easy reads and limit your options to anticipation throws on third downs.

Imo the only way around that is to never get into third and long which, some coaches are good at avoiding those kinds of situation... but you really have to baby the QB so much to try to win in spite of poor anticipation. Any time your offense gets into a negative situation it’s not likely you’re gonna continue that drive.

I love Lamar and Deshaun cause they play wild as hell but they also still have great anticipation and patience in the pocket when it’s the right call

I don’t think a traditional “pocket passer” is the only valid kind of QB, but I do think pocket presence and anticipation is just as important for scrambling QBs

I posted this in the game thread last night, but the young QBs in the AFC are insane

    Mahomes
    D. Watson
    L. Jackson
    J. Allen
    Herbert
    Tua
    Burrow

then you have Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields likely going to the AFC as well
