Some QB really are only “good” at a specific kind of offense and play sloppy / reveal their flaws in other offensive strategies

 

I mean. I don’t hate the idea of taking a shot at him considering our TE position is hot garbage and none of them can even stay healthy, much less actually get open or make a contested catch.

BUT yall better not get crazy with what you offer. I would much rather spend our third rounder on one of the good TE this year (Hopkins, Moss, Hunter etc) and develop them from scratch, than trade even a 4th for Hurst. If Hurst was really as good as his draft slot he would be getting more targets and getting more of Marc Andrews’ snaps.

Nah it’s definitely not that many. There’s a lot of scheme versatile talent.

Granted, scheme versatile talent usually gets drafted at a premium so it’s not like it’s easy to find, but you can have a roster full of adaptable players if you seriously invest in that in the draft

 

If you’re not drafting to your system to get “system players”, then what are you doing?

 

“System QB” is a straw man argument used to cut down NFL quarterbacks. That’s pretty much it imo

Understanding that systems have strengths and weaknesses and that you have to be system versatile to beat the best coaches. Because otherwise you are essentially telegraphing to the rest of the league how to beat you.

Belicheck will tear anyone apart whose game strategy is static and hardly mimics other styles

 

For example, Calais Campbell and Jalen Ramsey are scheme versatile players and that’s why it’s hard to find a weakness in either player. Both can do everything you’d ask that position to do in multiple schemes at an elite level.

To elaborate; granted, off-man coverage is not Ramsey’s BEST skill, his best trait is being more physical and disruptive than any other DB.

But against a fast as fuck WR? OR if you’re calling blitzes and trying to cover your ass in the secondary? Yeah you put Ramsey in off-man instead of press. Or in a deep cover 3 zone. And he can still do those things well if the situation calls for it. Would it undermine his talent if you used him that way all the time? Yes, hence why he didn’t do as well on the Rams this year. BUT he does give you the option to change it up and that’s priceless.

With Calais, I prefer him at DE rather than DT because he is a diverse run defender AND a great pass rusher there, whereas at 3 tech DT he only gets to utilize his pass rush skills. But if the other team has a guard with short arms who can’t handle Calais length? Or if you’re playing tackles who can’t handle speed and it’s better to have Yannick / Allen on the outside? Then you shift Calais inside more often, and get 7 sacks that game. Meanwhile, a 3-4 team like his old Arizona squad loved him for his rare ability to have two-gap responsibility EVERY play and still generate several sacks a year (like a Cameron Heyward or Cameron Jordan).

This is why scheme versatile matters. You want to be able to adjust players roles slightly based on how they match up to the other team. A “system player” who can’t adapt is more likely to be erased or shut down by teams who know how to defend that really well.

 

System QB is a made up phrase that means nothing

Ive been wearing t-shirts and shorts out on the disc golf course most of the last week...its so weird. Last year there was like a 3 week period where it was so cold and the wind chill was low enough I didnt go outside and play.
