They did a horrible job with their offense simply by keeping Greg Roman around another year. I’m not misplacing anything. Their offense was dogshit this year aside from Lamar, Andrews (who had a down year by the way), and the offensive line

Ravens need to actually get serious about their WR room. Enough with the Devin Duverney, Demarcus Robinson, Sammy Watkins bullshit

Idk I think the Ravens have much bigger problems than their receiving corps. They are always very injured, have a horrible OC, and were missing a star QB (and don’t have one of the leagues better backups either). Their defense also really let them down in a couple games. From a strategy perspective, idk how we are ignoring the fact that Lamar is so good at running that he takes a safety away from coverage and makes it easier to pass with less receiving talent. That’s part of the equation and part of the justification for drafting BPA instead of targeting more receivers

I don't think it's going to matter because I don't think Lamar plays another down for them

I didn't used to think that, but the last few weeks has swayed me

I completely agree, which has me interested if they actually move away from such a run-heavy approach and look at doing a more pass-friendly offense without Lamar

I’m not ignoring what Lamar brings to the table. He changes the game the moment he sets foot on the field. I just don’t understand why the Ravens realized that and decided to make his life more difficult by giving him little help in the passing game. It’s always just been Andrews and one dude at WR.

I agree with this and with them not resigning Lamar. I think those things are much bigger fish to fry.

Right, counterpoint, statistically, the Ravens and Panthers had the same season offensively. And one of those teams traded one of the best skill position players in the game during the season.

Whats being lost here too is that Lamar was cheap. Until this year, he was being paid like 1/20th what he will be next year. They had free money to pay guys to fill skill roles.

Or hell, lets literally talk Marquise Brown. They got a 1st rounder...which they could have moved up slightly to get Treylon Burks. Or after their trade, taken Christian Watson. It seems almost impossible to argue Watson wouldnt have been an incredibly dynamic weapon in the BAL offense, and he'd have come pretty cheap as Lamar's salary spikes.

Jags have been showing you can survive and still compete with no WR1 if your offensive coach, your QB, your TE, and your running game are good

I pretty damn easily take both Hamilton at 14 and Linderbaum at 27 over Burks OR Watson even if I need receivers tbh. Maybe that makes me crazy but those are both A++++ value picks that really panned out. I mean they literally got both one of the best centers and one of the best safeties in the league (right away as rookies) in the same draft. That helped them arguably as much if not more than their WR corps hurt.

I feel like it’s easier than ever to find a great receiver in the second round or something now. Even the Colts have one.

this is what I’m thinking. Which option is better:

    (1) Extend Lamar for record breaking, fully guaranteed contract. That’s the only way he stays and plays.

    (2) Trade Lamar to the lions for picks 6, 18, next year first, a second/third somewhere, and Goff. Goff has two years left on his contract at 31m cap.

Yeah I mean when it comes down to it Hamilton is a much rarer talent at safety than Marqise Brown was at WR

but again, nothin I say matters if they keep Roman and/or let Lamar walk. Fucking idiots if they do either of those things. That kills my “draft BPA for the long-game, worry about WR when it makes sense value-wise” argument.

Sure, but lets do a comparison. Patrick Mahomes is clearly an insanely talent QB. He lost Tyreek Hill this year...they didnt stand pat, they went and got JuJu. Mahomes was already throwing to an elite TE and WR, and the second that dipped even a little, they filled the gap. The 49ers went and got McCaffrey when they saw their window (even if I thought it was a bad move at the time)

I'll also turn your point on its head; its because Lamar is so great that the Ravens are so impossibly fucked if he walks. We've seen what happens in this league when you have an elite QB that you give shit all weapons to throw to (Brady, Rodgers, etc). They demand trades, or they leave the second they are a free agent. What does BAL look like for the next 3-4 years if Lamar holds out and demands a trade? We gonna keep talking about how good their D or OL are as they go 9-8 every year?

Dude what gives you the impression Lamar has any interest in staying? Short of a contract bigger than Watson’s, it’s not happening.

Ravens probably should have gotten the contract done in 2021 then or earlier in 2022 before Watson got traded. Hard to have known what Watson’s deal was going to look like, but the Ravens be been able to negotiate a contract with Lamar since 2021. They blew it

@dorfmac this is more my criticism. They had the chance to have him cheaper and keep his morale / loyalty up if they valued him like they should have a year ago. Now they tried to play hardball and didn’t realize he has more leverage now because of 1) other contracts 2) the player union gaining momentum toward more contracts in general being fully guaranteed. He’s gonna get that deal somewhere.

but they need him! They gotta do it imo. Even if he spends some time hurt because of how damn much they run designed runs into the trenches with him… his ceiling when healthy could win them a superbowl against a better team. He already almost did that in his second year. That’s worth paying full guarantees and eating the injury risk imo. I would maybe understand if he was just a passer but that kinda passing AND running ability combined… I mean, you’re simply never going to find another Lamar, especially not where the Ravens usually draft. You’re most likely better off rolling with a backup when he’s hurt (and almost beating the Bengals in the playoffs anyway) than trying to replace him

Sure, the Ravens also didnt literally take that guy. Or George Pickens. Metchie went a pick before them. They took a punter in the 4th round, Romeo Doubs went 2 picks later. The Packers literally took 2 useable WRs in the draft because the Ravens didnt even consider the notion.

They came into 2022 with a bottom 5 WR corps and drafted 0 guys. Cant win the lottery if you dont bother to grab a ticket

All I’m gonna say is Trevor better get his fully guaranteed contract before it’s even time to decide on his fifth year option

This wasn’t the case when we were growing up on football, but now? teams that try to play hardball with players that are clear franchise talents… usually lose.
