That’s a silly argument that would make way more sense for Blake Bortles or someone else who throws with bad technique. Our WRs drop spirals that hit them in the hands and people still wanna blame Trevor for throwing it exactly how he’s supposed to throw it lol

    “He always throws so high”

see: every catch Davante Adams made in the game against us

    “he throws so many bullets”

    again, see: Matthew Stafford

good WRs don’t complain about slightly difficult ball placement when the QB is throwing them open, they don’t cower away from extending their body when they know they might get hit, they don’t make excuses when a heater gets thrown their way to beat a LB over the middle… they catch shit that hits them in the hands period. QB can’t catch it for you and you’re not always gonna be open enough to get the ball in your chest. Our WRs need to fuckin get their act together. Are they professional football players or not?

Trevor rarely even gets a chance to do good QB shit like anticipate throws in tight windows and use ball placement to curve the ball around a nearby defender. When he does awesome shit like that it half the time gets dropped and doesn’t show up on the stat sheet. Of course people who mostly only box score analyze him think he’s worse than he is under those conditions. Those things require a receiver to be on the same page and be anticipating where the balls going… and then to actually not drop it.

    The rivalry is back on

counterpoint 1: Brian Thomas Jr looked leaps and bounds better when someone other than Trevor Lawrence was throwing him the ball last year. I’d be okayish with chalking that up to regression except:

counterpoint 2: it’s a recurring issue and the only constant is Trevor Lawrence. 3 HC/OC combos and an entirely churned pass catching room with an incredible amount of draft and FA capital later, it’s the same story. The overwhelmingly most likely answer at this point is “Trevor Lawrence’s baseline for dropped passes is a couple ticks higher than the average QB” in the same way that’s true for Joe Burrow and OL/pressure rate type stats

tbh that’s simultaneously more similar than I thought and also tees up well the “Trevor Lawrence himself is a pretty good QB (the YBC type metrics) who doesn’t get as much out of his weapons as he should (the YAC metrics and the drop %)” narrative that’s more nuanced than simply saying “Trev stinks”

I think the important thing is you can find advanced stats that support a lot of different arguments and the eye test is how you determine which narrative holds the most weight.

BTJ also seems to be clearly nursing a wrist injury that I’m sure is impacting him quite a bit. I do think some of the issues stem with Trevor, but just wanted to put that out there too

It’s not the same because Anthony Richardson isn’t a good quarterback, but the Jags narrative w/Trev gives me shades of how the supporting cast in Indianapolis was a question mark last year and then they brought in Daniel Jones(!) and Tyler Warren and suddenly this is a historically good offense through 7 games

I also don’t think the pass catching room really had that much of an overhaul. It’s still BTJ and some WR3/WR4 level receivers. With BTJ as good as he was last year that’s enough for a QB to succeed but with BTJ slumping this hard, Travis not developed as a consistent offensive weapon yet, and Brenton Strange injured… right now Trevor has zero (0) receivers he can consistently trust. They’re all performing like WRs/TEs you occasionally target when the play design naturally gets them open, not ones you scheme an offense around

I don’t think you can add a WR in the first round one year and have that dude immediately establish himself as WR1 and then trade up in the top 5 for the Heisman-winning WR in the next year and not call that overhauling the WR room in a 2 year window.

i think it is very very obvious by now that Trevor is not a QB that can elevate a team around him and that he needs very good circumstances to succeed, which is FINE, that's MOST quarterbacks

Not sure I can name a player who has gotten so many excuses made for him. Maybe Herbert and that’s about it.

I get why people who haven’t been following the Jags and are using mostly stats think it’s a chicken or egg question - but to me it’s like flying to a cold place and seeing red trees and thinking the tree color causes cold weather not the other way around, when the people who were there could clearly see the weather got cold first and THEN the trees changed.

I do hold Trevor accountable for his errors and ideally yeah he would control what he can control and keep his own game clean even if his supporting cast is playing like ass. In a single game sample size yes that’s what we should expect. After seeing how fucking frustrating the receiver play continues to be for YEARS though, I mean the guys human, people don’t perform as well when they’re frustrated, and they tend to make errors/overcompensate and not trust the by the book decisions in the process when they feel like doing things by the book / as practiced isn’t yielding results. It’s not hard to understand why Trevor is underperforming it that doesn’t mean an offense that actually executes wouldn’t fix that
