diving forward is not “giving yourself up” lol that factually wasn’t a slide

any ball carrier should be able to dive forward and roll into the end zone if they weren’t touched. A slide is a very deliberate motion for a reason - the whole reason QBs slide instead of diving is to signify to the refs they are giving themselves up. It undermines that entire rule if they’re going to call diving forward “giving yourself up” too

Also it is a new rule change - a dumb one! - but still technically the right one. lol

The rule change is that a head-first dive is now treated the same way as a feet-first slide, and so a quarterback who dives into the end zone is considered to have given himself up. And that's exactly what happened to Washington quarterback Taylor Heinicke today.
