Yeah, Trevathan doesn't have any history of being dirty really. It was definitely a reckless play, I think he thought Adams was going to break out of the tackle at the side because he was kinda leaning towards making a maneuver to the left to break the tackle, but he couldn't actually break the tackle and as a result he was completely stopped when Trevathan pummeled into him from an opposite direction. Furthermore, the tackle the safety/CB was making lowered Adams's head which is a big reason he took the bulk of Trevathan's helmet in the way he did.

That's not to say the hit wouldn't be illegal otherwise. Regardless, Trevathan led with the crown and the hit was a disgusting hit, and would have been even if all of these things didn't happen the way they did. But I have a feeling it was a combination of a lot of things that caused the hit to be as terrifying of a hit as it was.
