They don’t, they’re on a simple timer. I forgot the exact cadence without looking at the code itself, (found it, it’s 45 seconds) but it’s a literal countdown and refresh to show a new ad. The post box itself does not trigger ads, the ads themselves are refreshing which moves the page as a whole, which if the keyboard is open moves it as well on mobile, sometimes closing it, or causing other taps. Which is why fixing the “jumps” should fix the issue, but I would need a few hours to look into better putting strict dimensions on a container to keep that from happening, and there’s quite a few edge cases (ad size changing depending on screen size) I’d have to test for. It’s a couple days project that is on my list to look at, but I simply haven’t had any time to work on any development work during my weekends, and at some point probably need to take a week off and sit down to address some things that have been sitting there. A very “fun” way to spend vacation time.

I don’t understand denying that that’s the profit model of the internet and that allowing more invasive ads is very often an intentional decision. It’s legitimately the whole reason why JavaScript is the default coding language of the internet, because of how well it deals with asynchronous code. To not acknowledge the fact that it’s how the whole industry runs (to varying degrees) is to misconceive the context of the discussion.

Ads are not as profitable when they aren’t interactive, Jason admitted it himself in his response to me. He’s right that it is a necessary evil to let them be interactive in SOME way, but coming up in response to to a post box being clicked is just way too much in a forum where users click the post box hundreds of times. It disrupts the entire main function of the page.

I never claimed it was some sort of conspiracy, I simply claimed that Jason was doing what every website owner in modern internet capitalism does by allowing subtly invasive ads to earn better pay for website traffic than non-invasive ads. I’m fine with the concept of ads, but some are more disruptive than others - that specific issue is extremely disruptive and a cheap way to generate clicks. And I don’t think it’s a bug. I think the ad company has it act like that very intentionally. I don’t mind being disagreed with but I really don’t like being treated as though I have no knowledge on the subject. It’s not; “I have a degree so I’m better than you,” it’s “I have some knowledge / background that at least influences what I’m saying and I’d like that not to simply be invalidated or mocked”
